Lately I've been having trouble with zoning out. The best way I can explain the sensation is that I'm super focused on my own mind, and unable to focus for very long on the outside world. It's like being underwater.

How do you handle such moments, when you need to be attentive?

I am just like you. I get so lost in my own world my thoughts are louder that what's actually going on.
Then I snap out of it and think "wow, I was zoned out for that long?". I have many embarrassing moments due to this.
I try to just focus on what I should do, but just trying doesn't help much and I drift off anyway.

So I'm also after ways of handling this just like you are.

I like zoning out  There aren't many occasions when I shouldn't do it, so I don't feel guilty when I do so. If anybody notices it, I say "pardon me, I got lost".

My biggest problem with it is that it makes talking to people very hard. Even if I excuse myself for being "tired", I still am sort of lost in a fog and can't interact as well as normally. And under normal conditions, I'm not so great at it either, so it's very hobbling. I need some extra focus to remember to look at people, greet them, smile, etc.

Zoning out is good when I'm sitting with a group of people and I've got nothing to say.
