Then maybe it doesn't matter what career you choose - Only that you work to be the best at it that you can be. Lots of people who don't have what you'd call "high status jobs" still take a lot of pride in their work. It gives them a sense of self-respect. Others may not respect the work itself, but they'll respect people who respect themselves.
