Not a whole lot, from what I've read here. I don't know exactly, but I'm sure someone can give a better estimate.

I think it depends on the state and other things. I know someone who gets under $600/month and I think the typical amount where I live is somewhat less than $700/month (I forget how much).

It can also vary for other reasons, although I do not know how that works.

About 66% of the amount I'd get if I worked a minimum wage job. Also, about 30% below the federal poverty level. You can live on it, but you have to be very careful and you can't have any luxuries ("luxuries" in this case including things like TV, clothing that isn't from Goodwill, car payments, or air conditioning).

It's not a lot; but it's not supposed to be. The government pretty much figured out, "Okay, what's the least we can spend to keep these people alive?" and set that as the amount.

Also, poverty is mandatory or you lose benefits.

I am gobsmacked that food stamp benefits reduce the SSI payment.

Actually, that makes sense. If you have food stamps, that means you spend less on food.

Yes, they do have limits on how much money and valuable property you can have at any one time; the limit is usually about $1000-$2000 depending on whether you're on Medicaid too. If you have more than that, your SSI goes down and they expect you to spend your savings instead.

Makes sense to who? Food stamp need is based on your income, so you get food stamps and then they reduce your income, even though your need was established based on that income. How does that make sense?

Do you know how that works? I am trying to work out how this applies in relation to the "lump sum" payment after SSI starts.
