I never thought that I might have Asperger's Syndrome. I always knew there was something different about me. The only person I knew with Asperger's Syndrome was my ex boyfriend's brother and I was nowhere like him. One day I was on a forum explaining my symptoms and the majority of people said it sounded like Asperger's Syndrome. I didn't think anything of it at first but the last year has got me really wondering. I was always a quiet, odd child in school. In got a lot of testing done but nobody could ever put a finger on to what I had. Some of my symptoms or quirks:
-when I was a child I didn't look into people's eyes until my kindergarten teacher had a conference with my mom and my mom basically punished me and I look into people's eyes now but I can't for very long without averting my eyes and then looking back
-I was an extremely quiet well behaved child and I still am extremely, painfully shy
-I didn't care how I looked until I was 16ish
-when I read I wiggle my fingers (I censor myself when I'm around people)
-my brain processing speed is really slow
-I have a learning disability with math
-certain sounds really annoy me
-I'm sensitive to loud sounds
-I get overstimulated in crowded areas and need breaks when I'm social for too long
-I was always good in language arts and reading
-I had special interests as a child, first I was obsessed with people dying, then child development, reading, then everything that had to do with Little House on the Prairie, Shirley Temple movies...Now I'm interested in child development, psychology, Internet, reading and techno music
-when I was a child I preferred to talk to grown ups
-I was a bit of a loner in school
-I'm not a very emotional person compared to most people or at least I keep it bottled up
-my fine motor skills are horrible and I can't swim or ride a bike..my penmanship is very messy
-my coordination is terrible
-I have a hard time multitasking
-I'm very observant and detail oriented
-I love alone time

I've always wondered if I'm on the spectrum. My mom thinks I might be and my psychiatrist said I could be but she said I need to see a psychologist and I have no money to see a psychologist. If I am on the spectrum I think it's a very close line. I've taken online tests and they all said I was but those are online tests, you can't rely on those. One thing I've noticed is I don't seem to be as intelligent as most aspies but I've heard you can be average IQ as well.

What do you guys think?

I think you sound like me actually. You even have some of the same special interests, haha. I'm waiting for my appointment with a specialist since my psychologist thought i might have it. I've always thought of myself as some kind of outsider, so I wonder if aspergers might be the thing. My IQ is above average, but you dont need to have a higher IQ to be an aspie. In my country the state covers health-expenses, sucks that it can't be that way in other countries...

This is what's keeping me from getting a diagnosis as well. I'm scared that the costs of my insurance might skyrocket. It's crazy how it's considered a "pre-existing condition" and we can be charged extra for it, even if we never knew we had it. :(

Lostgirl1986, that does sound like AS. But as I'm sure many after me will say, "I'm not a psychologist, so I can't truly diagnose you."

Do you know anyone that's for sure an aspie or autistic? I have a friend that's autistic and I'm thinking of asking him to refer me to a specialist, under the condition that the specialist will not report findings to my insurance. It'll probably be tricky, but I hope I can get it done. Maybe somebody you know can hook you up like that, too?

Well, depending on your health insurance you will get different results. Typically when I had dental insurance they'd give me one price to pay (at the dentists office). I'd tell them "no way in hell", and they'd start to get upset - so I'd make them recheck their numbers and they'd come back with a lower price. This happened constantly... (I knew what I was supposed to pay).

Your medical bills are so high because of private insurance. Your car costs $1000 dollars to fix but they charge $4000 because its through insurance most of the time and pocket the change. Or your windshield (through small places here), can be replaced for 100-120 dollars, but all these company's tend to go through insurance carriers, so they charge in excess of $500 because the insurance company's will pay. This also means you are getting screwed as the consumer, when your just looking for a little help.

But you sound like you may be aspie lostgirl..

I know one of my ex's (after the fact), and after my diagnosis, I thought back and figured she could be an aspie. But she was VERY social/became a wedding planner I believe.

Yeah, it would just be nice for once to find out what's going on in my brain and if I'm on the spectrum or not. Also, I plan on going back to college this September so it would be nice to get more assistance in college if I know what's wrong with me. I live in Canada so I get free health care to an extent. Psychologists, you have to pay for unles you're under 18. If you want a psychiatrist and you don't have enough money for a private one they put you on a long waiting list or you can get one immediately if you're admitted into the hospital for an emergency. I was in the hospital during the summer for 2 weeks in the mental health ward so they gave me a psychiatrist right away. My psychiatrist has been on leave since October and isn't coming back until May but I'm going to talk to her then and see if she can help me, she's a different psychiatrist so maybe she'll be able to help.

Thanks for your input everybody.
