I have kind of a funny question. Anyways, occasionally I will go to youtube and watch videos of people talking about Aspergers syndrome and how they've coped with it and such. However, I have noticed a trend when watching these: that almost everyone in them is British! It seems that like 80% or so have British accents (with a few Australian/New Zealanders thrown in the mix too lol). I don't have anything against the British, I just found this trend interesting. So, it got me curious as to why this specific demographic seems to be so overrepresented? Is it because Aspergers is more widely known, or diagnosed, in England? Or is it simply that British people are more likely to get in front of a camera and start yapping away? Or perhaps it's just my luck with the search results lol. Anyways love to hear some opinions!

I've noticed that as well. Actually I find that whenever I'm watching a video about Asperger's or reading an article, most of the time that person is from Europe. When my ex boyfriend lived in Germany as a child, his older brother got diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome there. I wonder if it's more widely researched there. Another reason could be because a lot of countries in Europe have good and cheaper social services and health care is maybe it's easier for people to get it diagnosed there because you don't have to spend a fortune on it as an adult. I've noticed that a lot of young children get diagnosed there though.

Well, I've not experienced this (probably because I don't watch Youtube videos all that often) but I reckon it has something to do with British people having great accents, so everyone loves listening to them speak.

I was thinking the same exact thing! I don't know, maybe it's more widely recognized over there.

I mean, give credit to pro-spectrum civil rights and self-advocacy. :D I really think the UK may be 5 to 10 years ahead of much of the rest of the world.

From what I've heard I thought it was hard to get diagnosed over there? Awhile ago I thought there was more awareness over there because Australia is usually behind the Brits in most things, because of all the documentaries coming out of there.
I don't mind hearing a British accent.

Hypothesis: the Commonwealth countries tend to have a "blokey" culture, which presents extra difficulty to people who have Asperger's, and encourages them to speak out more. Americans, on the other hand, are experts at diagnosing mental problems (maybe too good at it), and to them it is not as big a deal.

Not sure about vloggers, but I did notice that many documentaries about people with psychological/neurological issues (not only AS, but also about Tourette's, or eating disorders, and others) are British. Both on Youtube and satellite tv (Sky). It could be that there is more of an educational twist to public media.

Part of the reason could just be that (home) broadband is almost unheard of in the country I used to live in, while it seems that most people have broadband access to the internet in England. i.e.: Just much easier to upload a video than via a 14400 dial-up modem on third-world wires that'll drop a computer connection every halfhour if you're even trying to send someone photos :?
OP, I don't know where you are, so am not sure what the case is in your country.

Britain includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland... but i can't say I've seen many with accents that sound to me like any of the last three :?
That said... Britain having been an empire/colonialPower there are a lot of people around the world with English accents by descent. I've met people who I thought come from England but who actually come from New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, South Africa, USA, India and Egypt -to name but a few places.

I've seen a lot of Americans do videos on AS too. Some of my favourite ones are done by American people, for example this is one of my favourites and I agree with him 100 percent:
