The revised manual creates a new diagnosis called social communication disorder, whose symptoms are similar to Asperger syndrome, often seen as a high-functioning variant of autism. Author and professor Temple Grandin fears people diagnosed with Asperger syndrome will be switched to the new diagnosis.

i hate it how aspergers is always referred to as high functioning autism. it's just unscientific and at one point DSM5 actually explains why and seeing as this article is about DSM5 why cant they use it? but that wasnt the point i wanted to make. is it really an issue that people with aspergers will be re-Dx-ed to social communication disorder. i mean the symptoms of autism are similar in terms of social deficits but to be Dx-ed with AS you need to have the other symptoms of autism- the repetitve behaviours and thought patterns bit. the bit that isnt included in social communication disorder diagnostic criteria. why would they Dx you with that if you more acurately fit ASD? is this really an issue?

Perhaps they just might not have autism (the 20%)? After all, the majority of those with an ASD don't actually have AS or AD, rather they have PDD-NOS, which is a box for people who don't fit Kanner's or Asperger's (see: autism); perhaps they might not actually have autism too (a good portion of anyway)?
