The mercola article is of very dubious validity and the pubmed abstract specifically states that the study was inconclusive (they are about different studies).

The mercola article relates a study where women were given probiotic yogurt, something that tastes like probiotic yogurt, or no yogurt for a month, then given an MRI. The MRI showed brain changes. There was no mention in the source article of whether a difference was detected in the actual performance of the assigned task of matching photos of people expressing emotion. The study was sponsored by the manufacturer of both the yogurt-like substances.

The mercola article jumps from these detectable changes in brain activation to two very broad and dangerous conclusions (among others):

1) That people should make home-made yogurt from raw milk ... This is a suggestion that immediatly should destroy the credibility of anyone suggesting it... Modern cow barns are dirty and raw milk is absolutely loaded with pathogenic bacteria. This suggestion poses huge public health risks.

2) That autism is somehow linked to the timing of vaccination with respect to intestinal flora inoculation. There is no evidence cited to suggest this, it is a huge jump from the study, and pulls in already proven to be fraudulent claims which are also responsible for public health problems.

The reason cited for suggesting that people make their own yogurt is that the commercial products of the company that sponsored the study have a lot of sugar... It is much safer to just buy balkan or greek yogurt made from pasteurized milk and check the ingredients list for sugar.
