I have noticed that everyone I know who is on the autistic spectrum likes to draw, what is the appeal?

I don't draw portraits, but I love to draw (and paint, and sew, and sculpt)

I enjoy a lot of things about it. It's satisfying to create something, it's fun to use it as a way to think about things and speculate about how something would look (eg. if I wonder what a cat would look like if they had long stilt legs, I can just doodle it and see). It's relaxing to sit and work on something that's time consuming and quiet. It's a simple way to immerse yourself in another world of your own creation.

I didn't know that drawing was a common interest for autistic people, but it makes sense.

I'm not obsessive about it at all, but I have honed my drawing skills since 2008. My original motivation was simply to be able to make my own nice looking avatars and stuff.

I've been painting since I could hold a paintbrush. Since I was 2 maybe? I'm going to be 37 soon.

I get into drawing now and then. I never could do realistic artwork, but I can rock the surreal and abstract. For me it is therapy of sorts. When I get really stressed or trying to process what's going on with me, art can be a really valuable tool for me to work through stuff my mind can't quite work out. It's like sticking a metaphorical faucet into my head and letting things out that I can't quite articulate or work out on my own. It works.

Thanks. I have others. I've been painting since I was 2 or 3 and now I'm almost 37. My grandniece is constantly asking me, "Aunt Meerkat, can you teach me to paint good like you?" I tell her, "You get "good" with lots and lots of practice. But sure, I could show you some basics."

I used to draw, I draw cartoons & portraits, people said I was really good at it. When I was a teenager, I wanted to try doing a portrait, I drew from one of my albums, I couldn’t do it, it was a stick figure. My freshman year of high school, I took cartoon classes, I worked with ink bottles, my ability of drawing came out, I love that class. In high school, I also took art classes, I love it too. In 1996, I tried doing a portrait again, I was 26, I drew Bryan Adams, my fave singer. I spent hours on the portrait, I kept making mistakes, I finally succeeded in doing a portrait, I do many more portraits after that, I have most of my art work still, I put alot of art stuff in my photo library in my iPad.

If have to tell the reasons, it may be important to be able to express someone own emotions without the involvement of others.
