So far i think it is pretty good. The producers have been pretty clear that Dr Murphy is not meant to represent autistic people, but I wouldn't mind personally if he did. I find the character a lot more relateable than most other characters.
He is also basically what I want to be when I am an adult. I can't exactly change the autistic part but a surgeon is my goal.
So how do you guys feel about it?

Murphy seems to be getting more and more autistic in every newer episode which my mom will call worse and worse. I just think they are doing show and tell and evolving the character because it's impossible to show every symptom in one episode. I don't know if they are making up new symptoms in every script deciding "let's decide he is confused by this."

It was interesting they decided to show the female black nurse has issues of her own so she tried to put an adjustment disorder label on herself and the doctor told her she didn't meet the criteria.

It hasn't seemed like he has been getting 'more autistic' to me, rather just showing different aspects of his personality.

I do not think he is more autistic but that the highly competitive social aspects of his job is bringing it out.

Unlike the OP I think he presents as a checklist of autism traits.

The most important thing is not how flawed or not flawed the characterizations are but that unlike most of the shows in the last 10 years which featured cute, socially ackward charactors not called autistic The Good Doctor is both centered around an autistic character and massively popular.

I hate it.
Absolutely painful to watch.

Murphy often feels like a caricature but I've always been one to root for the underdog, the possible anti-hero, and the outcast. I've watched every episode and now that the drama is starting to drum up, I find myself becoming more disinterested. The first few episodes were charming but I suppose it's hardly realistic to assume that the show would always center solely on Shaun. Especially in an ER drama given the popularity of House, Grey's Anatomy, etc. Grey's Anatomy has long been throwing some political dialogue in. I feel like The Good Doctor is a knock-off with the addition of the autistic surgeon resident even though I know the Good Doctor was originally a Korean drama (it's Americanized with a Korean producer and they got rights). I definitely appreciate their efforts but it could be cool to see some less obvious Aspies or those who don't have Savant Syndrome.

I have seen about half of the episodes. I find that each episode shows an autistic trait. For example, when Shaun had a difficult time not disclosing a diagnosis, but had to sugarcoat, which he could not do. The head doctor acts and cares for Shaun, but he is trying to mold Shaun into somebody that Shaun does not want to be. That is so irritable and definitely can relate to. I am pretty much certain that Shaun will ask his next door neighbor on a date by the end of the season. Sigh. I think that because people get disinterested in characters that aren't in some sort of relationship.

i think he is trying to have him get better at his job so they won't have to fire him. Social skills are always important on the job. No social skills, can't keep employment. At least they are giving him the chance.

I believe Dr. Glassman is trying to help Shaun, but Shaun does not want help from a complete stranger.

I would recommend watching to the end of the season. Some of your speculation is correct and other parts incorrect. The last episode (which I only just saw a few days ago) is a bit hit or miss though.

I know it's basically soap opera but I think the portrayal of Shaun is really well done. So much so it makes me miss my son. Shaun has so many of his mannerisms, the stiffness of his movements, his prosody and my boy reacts to stress just like Shaun does. I've actually cried watching it. I know, I'm such a sook

I am really enjoying the show and have liked watching Shaun progress from just suctioning to actual cutting and performing surgery.

But I question why he has such difficulties socialising and knowing what to say to people when he has been through med school. Surely he learnt something there about others?

Yeah the lack of social skills is a bit extreme, but its probably going to have him get better later I would guess

Freddie Highmore has been nominated for a Golden Globe award for his portrayal.
