Sometimes I would be sitting somewhere like the library, or a computer lab, working on something. Then all of a sudden, I'd hear someone's cell phone next to me chiming "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or something like that out loud. For a few moments, I sit there, still working, with Mary Had a Little Lamb playing in my head. About 15 minutes later, just as Im getting back into focus, someone else's phone plays the "Hallelujah" chorus and shatters my concentration again. Of course, I'd have to plod on (or else that Big Term Paper Thats Due In Two Days would remain unfinished and surely become a victim of procrastination). Just as I figure all is clear, yet another person's cell phone starts playing a Britney Spears song and by then, I'm halfway ready to run up the wall and jump out the window. And the strange thing is that no one else in the lab seems to be bothered by cell phones ringing, but sometimes it irks me to high heaven. Has anyone else been in this kind of situation?

I mean come on! Has anyone ever heard of VIBRATE?

My ringtone is the AT&T/Cingular jingle.

I also hate it when people have loud conversations over their cell in public. I also hate the ones with the ear piece where it seems like they are talking to no one, and if they are looking at you it looks like they are talking to you and it is embarassing when you respond only to realize that they weren't talking to you.

I do that all the time... :? ..I mean..respond when they are talking to their ear piece.
S;funny..a few years before the ear pieces became popular, the boss of a boyfriend of mine warned him to be careful of me because he'd seen me talking to myself at a bus stop one day.....(actually I was probably singing)....Who'da thunk that only a few years later a large portion of the general population would be standing around looking like they were talking to themselves at bus stops.

It is a common coverup used by schitzophrenics and whatnot who regularly do talk to themselves out loud in public. They will pretend to be talking on a cell phone, i guess so as not to arouse suspicion/attention. I have observed this on more than one occasion, and it was also verified by my schitzophrenic friend who has done it himself...

Oh yeah..and I hate it when I hear pahntom rings...or worse...feel phantom vibes.......used to happen alot.

I am decidedly less cell phone dependant than my peers.

they don't care about how it affects others otherwise they wouldn't do it.

people who know am,all have their mobiles on vibrate only, but the sound from that is still extremely painful.
am have mobile on completely silent [a old motorola razr],only use texts, and only have sister, her boyfriend and dads' details on it,so less likely to miss many texts.

You should report this to Library Administration. You could use your original post almost word for word. A well-written complaint gets considerably more attention than an ill-considered rant.

I agree! I work at the library, and patrons come in holding noisy conversations on their cell phones. Some of the ringtones they use are also irritating. Some have rap songs. Others have some corny song like "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." The worst ones are the ones that talk or just have a series of annoying beeps.

This has happened to me on more than one occasion. In fact, once, a guy was asking a lot of questions to someone and I answered 4 or 5 and thought we were having a conversion. 8O Then he just got up and walked off in the middle of one and I was embarrassed. :?

Ringtones don't bother me at all, or when phones go off. Just when my parents repeatedly call me every ten minutes. Jeez.

By the way, what ringtones do people have? (I read Tim's post)

Mine is a clip of the song "It's A Long Way To The Top" by AC/DC.
And I have it set to play my girlfriend's favorite Van Halen song when she calls me.

I don't have a ringtone. Waste of 99 cents. I set my cell to vibrate. I rarely use it.

OMFG!! !! I hate that! Esp when whomever is calling that phone, keeps calling over and over again! If the person who owns the phone is absent, I usually go over and turn the phone off myself! They are lucky that my nerves are so completely shot by now that I don't throw the phone against the wall! I am actually not a violent person in the least, but this really upsets my whole sense of well-being!! ! That's why I keep my phone on vibrate...unless I am at home or in the car...I also use the simple, "ring ring" option!

:) Mobile phone ringtones. Arrrrggggghhhh!! !! ! I hate the bloody things. They shred my nerves too. Another thing; why are people so obsessed with mobile phones as status symbols/fashion accessories? - It's pathetic.

When it's a quiet space, a train or something like a library, I just wish someone would snatch those bloody phones from them and smash them. I don't mind someone taking a call if they're discreet about it, the problem is those bloody ringtones (yes, why not vibrate?), and then loud conversations. There is such a thing as a volume control, people, I don't need to hear what your sweet little hellion has been up to in intimate detail.

Oh, ringtone? Currently a default Motorola one, but I'll probably get round to putting something else on. Probably the prelude from Shostakovich's 2nd Prelude & Fugue, it's very ringtone-ish.
