My father is Mexican, my mother is Irish. With a heritage like that, I guess I have no choice but to go out drinking.

The joke I usually follow this with is: now guess what my religion is.

White? Okay, I'll buy that. Protestant? Your religion is your religion. Anglo-Saxon? Now that I might have to disagree with. The Anglo-Saxons were a loosely related group of peoples who migrated to the British Isles from what is now primarily the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark after the Roman army left Britannia. They are so named from the two most prominent Germanic tribes that settled what would become England: the Angles (or Anglii) and the Saxons (or Saxones). The third tribe traditionally named with them are the Jutes (or Iutae). These weren't the only tribes to immigrate to Britannia: Frisians (Frisii), Franks (Franci), Danes (Dani), Alamanni, and other Germanic peoples came in smaller numbers. Basically, England was the America of the early Middle Ages. The Anglo-Saxon language, whose "standard" (i.e., the normalized form scholars usually study) is the Wessex dialect; this language is also known as Old English. Scandinavian settler also occupied eastern and northwestern England a little later (i.e., the Danelaw).

Even if you were to go by the term WASP as it was used in early twentieth-century America, it still limits what stock you can come from. Anglo-Saxon would usually exclude Celtic ancestry (i.e., Irish, Scottish, and Welsh), Jewish ancestry, and other non-English ancestry essentially. At its widest, Anglo-Saxon would include perhaps Dutch, German, and even Scandinavian ancestry; but French is usually excluded. Irish ancestry is positively excluded from Anglo-Saxon ethnicity.

My ancestry is roughly as follows:

  • German
  • Irish (including Ulster Scots I have recently discovered)
  • English
  • Chickamauga Cherokee (1/64th)
  • French

I have no idea about the specific lineage of my last name because it is INCREDIBLY common in the UK and can be found in all four places. I haven't the nerve to go searching... So technically I could have some Welsh as well from long, long ago.

I agree 110%; there are so many different countries throughout Europe.

Australia isn't part of Europe, it's just that white Australians are of European origin.

gotta love how all the ethnicities are listed like this and people say. "swedish and portugese or spanish and british." all look white to me :-D

All sarcasm aside, I wish I knew my roots. It somewhat hurts me to talk about ethnic background, because all I know is that my ancestors are from Africa and somewhere down the line, I may have some white genes interspersed therein, as I am somewhat lighter skinned.

Alot of those convicts were poor people convicted on questionable charges so they could be shipped off to Australia for forced labor.
