Hair dye?
Forgive me if there's been a topic about this before.
So, I want to dye my hair, but my sensory defensiveness is pretty severe, and I'm not sure how uncomfortable it would be for me. Also, some kinds of hair dye are toxic, and I don't want that. So have any of you guys dyed your hair? What was the experience like for you as a hypersensitive aspie? What brand would you recommend, for the least amount of discomfort and toxicity?

Depending on our pocketbook and your determination, I would suggest trying a color rinse first. If you go to a "Sally's Beauty" (seems there is one in every strip mall, your milage may vary) you can actually talk to a professional and look at the products with (usually) her.
But if you have not dyed before, a wash out ( usually several shampoos) hair color is a GREAT way to 'try it on' because living with the color (if you don't like it, remember your sensitivity is not only to the smell or the feel of the dye on your head, it is also aestetic and the color, or how it feels on your hair might just weird you out completely!) and to reverse dye is to let it grow out and then cut it off or BLEACH IT OUT and start all over again. (talk about a kick in the pocketbook!)
so, it does smell, even the stuff you get at the drugstore or grocery. just remember YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, so if you shell out a couple of bucks it usually looks it. Excellence or Preference costs more but see above.
good luck, you will probably just LOVE it!

I use ammonia free 'blonde in a bottle' but I noticed that after too much use it did make my scalp start to itch. However I did read about a new colour that's ammonia free and also free of other chemicals, but I can't remember the brand.
I'm growing out my natural colour now because I miss it and because I only started to bleach my hair in order to put colours on (blue, pink, green, etc. - I love colourful things) but was banned by my workplace and I recently decided I missed my dark hair.

I love dyeing my hair. The dye seems to make it so shiny and strong looking. The non-permanent colors arew great for the first time because they tend not to alter the hair too much and thus have milder chemicals. I use Garnier 100% color because the reds are pretty vibrant and there are always coupons in the paper, but it makes the individual hairs a litle thicker and a little sticky right after rinsing and stuff. I am very bad at rinsing out my hair, however and it's probably just leftover dye. There's also a new L'oreal product that washes out that is very vibrant. It only lasts 6-8 washes, but there's like orange and magents shades. Good luck. Oh, and if you have long hair, I recommend coercing a friend into this project, the back is very hard to do yourself. Have fun.

i find the boxed hair colours tend to make my scalp burn. i found that the stuff my hair stylist used (i splurged for the first time and got it done professionally) did not...it seemed to be not as harsh and smelled a lot nicer (didn't burn my nose and eyes) so you may want to check into that if you can afford it. also, if you are dying your hair black for the first time, easier to do on short hair (that way, if you decide you don't like it, it doesn't take as long to grow out...lol) and i have yet to find a 'temporary' black haircolour.
i like dying my hair too, i have it black now (naturally light brown) and now have fun putting blobs (for lack of a better word) of colour in...my next colour is going to be fuschia....and then maybe a nice shade of blue. manic panic colours are great for that...they only last a couple of weeks, then you get to change them...

To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world.
i started to read into natural hair dyes. henna, indigo and the like... i think ill go for darkening my hair color that way and if it works out the way i want it, ill switch to a henna base and indigo on top for heavy black (indigo needs a darkening with brighter hairs first, else it comes out green, as its a blue dye).
bonus thing is: henna, for example, even strengthens your hair. that natural stuff allegedly is far more likely to look like a believable color, too.
see for a start:

edit: d'uh... forgot to write something in response to your initial question.
i dont like physical contact much - but can usually overcome things like that when i know whos doing what. getting a close friend to do the job might make it easier - at least for me.
