Yes, exactly that for me, too. It's not grief or even happiness, but just kind of an overload, like a mini seizure. It swamps out everything else.

November Rain by Guns and Roses and Driving the Last Spike (Genesis - from the We Can't Dance album) both make me very emotional.

Tool - Lateralus

Most beautiful song I've ever heard.

For some reason, Hindi Sad Diamonds from Moulin Rouge, when it gets to that cresendo solo vocal that pierces the stratosphere like the mournful wailing of a dying angel, I get so choked up and have shed tears before.

The Scientist by Coldplay - because it was played at the funeral of friend of mine's newborn son. Just thinking about the parents carrying that tiny coffin, their hearts broken and still breaking, just thinking about that fills me with incredible sadness and I'm almost choking writing this description of it. It was the sadest moment of my life.

Jeff Buckley's album used to put me into a self destructive melancholy, but that's because of a girl. It doesn't affect me like that anymore.

I can understand people crying while appreciating the sublime beauty of a classical music composition; after all, that's the stereotype. However, I have trouble comprehending that anyone would cry in recognition of the beauty of "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead. It just doesn't strike me as a profoundly beautiful work of art. Sure, it might be fun to listen to, and it might even offer an artistic capture of a relationship gone awry. Still, I don't see that profound element in it.

Truthfully, though, I cannot recall any song making me cry out of recognition of its profound beauty or otherwise (although it's entirely possible a song has brought a tear or two to my eye because it reminded me of something else, but I can't recall anything off the top of my head).

well, i am not really affected by the lyrical content. Its the shape of the music, or even the singers voice. Often that means that there is some profound meaning behind the lyrics, but surely that influences the singer, and thus, i like it more. As I said before, "brothers in arms" by dire straits is like that. The way he plays his guitar evokes and mirrors his voice and lyrics. Metallica did a version, but its not the same. you need that voice and ultra clean mournful guitar together. It give me goose bumps.

And the video is incredible.

No song as ever made me cry, but the Phendrana Drifts Main Theme composed by Kenji Yamamoto could. None of you would have ever heard the song though. The song is played in Phendrana Drifts, on the planet of Tallon IV in Metroid Prime.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. Also the circumstances under which one first hears a song can influence the reaction on later listening.

I don't find "Fake Plastic Trees" to be particularly moving. Radiohead has many songs that are much better IMO. I suppose people are moved by it because it was the first song they heard by Radiohead. He does have a unique voice.

Lately, stuff by Mika is making me cry. The latest one was 'Happy Ending'. The words in themselves signify much of the lonliness and isolation I feel, and the backing singers somehow remind me of the madrigal choir I used to be a part of at school. Every time I hear the song, I wish that I had both the skills to rescore the song for five-part female voices, and four other friends to sing it with me. The whole thing thogether speaks to me of lonliness, loss and regret.

Nice! She's one of my all time favourites.

Working Class Hero - John Lennon

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so f*cking crazy you can't follow their rules

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and class less and free
But you're still f*cking peasants as far as I can see

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
Yes, that song can make me cry. There are some others too but I just can't remember all of them just now.

This is a corny list, so brace yourselves:

The hymn, It is well with my soul

The Star Spangled Banner and Battle Hymn of the Republic

Silent Night

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton

The Wreck of the Edmunds Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot

God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood

Do they know it's Christmas by Band-aid (much better than We are the world)
