My favorite piece of music is a yiddish folk song called "di goldene pave" (the golden peacock). It moves me to tears every time I hear it. I'll link you to an mp3 of a recording by (I think) an Israeli band called "The Klezmatics"

'Kite' by U2 it is from the album All That You Can't Leave Behind

The song is about letting go of someone you love when I was going through my break up earlier this year.

This is it

Kite

Something is about to give
I can feel it coming
I think I know what it means
I'm not afraid to die
I'm not afraid to live
And when I'm flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did

'Cause hardness it steps in
You need some protection
The thinner the skin

I want you to know
That you don't need me anymore
I want you to know
You don't need anyone, anything at all

Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to know what it is will break you
I don't know which way the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time is coming round
Don't wanna see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

In summer I can taste the salt of the sea
Theres a kite blowing out of control on a breeze
I wonder what's gonna happen to you
I wonder what has happened to me

I'm a man, I'm not a child
A man who see's
The shadow behind your eyes

Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to know what it is will break you
I don't know which way the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time is coming round
Don't wanna see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't take it
Life should be fragrant
Roof top to the basement
The last of the rock stars
When hip hop drove the big cars
And the time when new media
Was the big idea
That was the big idea

"My Immortal" by Evanescence came out at the same time that my 13yr. old son decided to go live with his father for year. I couldn't listen to it at all. If you are a parent you'll understand why I still get misty-eyed when I hear it.

I found out about a group from Iceland called "Mum". Not really sad in my mind. It's just so weird and ethereal that I love it. I went for a drive into the mountains listening to Mum on a misty day a while back and the visuals along with the music put me on the verge of tears.

Eye of the Storm - The Crüxshadows

The trials you are now facing
They are not greater than your will
For there is nothing under heaven
You cannot overcome
See the door that lies before you
And know this too shall pass
The confrontation of your fears
In strength drawn from the past
Where the silent voices whisper
Find the course that is your own
And however great the obstacle
You will never be alone
For I have watched the path of angels
And I have heard the heavens roar
There is strife within the tempest
But there is calm within the eye of the storm
In fragments of an instant
The chaos has returned
And all that was left to sentiment
Beneath the banner burned
And as that voice was slow receded
Into echoes, memory
My doubts were re-ignited
And fear awakened from its sleep
I believe in what I fight for
And I have paid for it with pain
I am here because my contributions
May help turn this fate away
And all who stood by and did nothing
Who are they to criticise?
The sacrifices of others
Our blood has bought their lives
This is the moment of truth
At the point of no return
Place faith in your convictions
As the boundaries start to blur
There is no love untouched by hate
No unity without discord
There is no courage without fear
There is no peace without a war
There is no wisdom without regret
No admiration without scorn
There is strife within the tempest
But there is calm in the eye of the storm
The pages of our history
Are written by the hand
With eyes and ears and prejudice
Too far removed to understand
And so the heroes of the ages
Are stripped of honesty and love
To make them seem less noble
And hide what we have become
If you find the courage within you
To face the path ahead
It matters not the outcome
If what you will gain instead
Is a heart deepened in the knowing
That experience carves the soul
And the very thing that empties you
Shall surely make you whole
Where the silent voices whisper
Find the course that is your own
And however great the obstacle
You will never be alone
For I have watched the path of angels
And I have heard the heavens roar
There is strife within the tempest
But calm in the eye of the storm

VNV Nation - 'Illusion'

I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all
The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand, Please, don't cry now

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you
Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

Being like you are
Well this is something else, who would comprehend?
But some that do, lay claim that
Divine purpose blesses them
That's not what I believe, it doesn't matter anyway
A part of your soul ties you to the next world
Or maybe to the last, I'm still not sure
What I do know is, to use the world is different
As we are to the world but, I guess you would know that

Scorpions - Wind of Change:

I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change
An August summer night
Soldiers passing by
Listening to the wind of change

The world is closing in
Did you ever think
That we could be so close, like brothers
The future's in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Chorus:
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change

Walking down the street
Distant memories
Are buried in the past forever

I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change

The wind of change blows straight
Into the face of time
Like a stormwind that will ring
The freedom bell for peace of mind
Let your balalaika sing
What my guitar wants to say

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change

(This song is about the fall of the Berlin Wall)

Only one really, Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction.

Endangered species, caged in fright
Shot in cold blood, no chance to fight
The stage in set, now pay the price
An ego boost don't think twice
Technology, the battle's unfair
You pull the hammer without a care
Squeeze the trigger that makes you Man
Pseudo-safari, the hunt is canned ...
The hunt is canned

All are gone, all but one
No contest, nowhere to run
No more left, only one
This is it, this is the Countdown to Extinction

Tell the truth, you wouldn't dare
The skin and thophy, oh so rare
Silence speaks louder than words
Ignore the guilt, and take your turn
Liars anagram is "liars"
Man you were never even there
Killed a few feet from the cages
Point blank, you're so courageous ...
So courageous

[Chorus]

One hour from now
Another species of life form
Will disappear off the face of the planet
Forever ... and the rate is accelerating

The song "Hold On" by Good Charlotte always makes me cry. The first time I heard it, I had to leave the room, I was crying so much! :( Also, "Kimi Ni Negai Wo" by Miyavi gets me teared up, especially when I'm feeling emotional already.

"Into the West" does a number on me. Also, Annie's "Why" sends me for a loop.

Peter Gabriel's "The Nest That Sailed the Sky". It's an instrumental but it's haunting. Also "In Your Eyes."

The live version of Genesis' "Your Own Special Way." And "Fading Lights."

Call me white conbread but sometimes the Carpenter's "We've Only Just Begun." still puts a lump in my throat knowing the song came from a woman that'd die a horrible, lonely death just a few years later.

I like The Cure's "A Thousand Hours" when I'm feeling down.

Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" sometimes makes me a little teary. Has anyone seen the movie "She's Having a Baby" with Kevin Bacon? I haven't made it through the scene where that song plays without shedding a little tear.

The soundtrack to "Somewhere in Time" is also a very lonely and haunting score.

I saw them live in Denmark last year and I was in floods of tears by the end. I've never seen anything so beautiful in my life.

On that same note, I'll add a couple of others of theirs that bring tears to my eyes. Just close your eyes, lie back, and let the music take you away... Beautiful doesn't even begin to do this justice.

"When I Was a Boy" by Dar Williams. I can't even TELL people about that song without tearing up.

Also sometimes "The Other Side of the World" by K.T. Tunstall.
