Today the woman at the post office said that to me, and kept going on and on about how it was going to be ok, things get better, I shouldn't be sad, etc. But the thing is, I wasn't sad at all. I must have been showing "sadness" in my expression but I wasn't feeling it and I wasn't intentionally trying to look any different. And this isn't the first time someone has thought I was sad when I wasn't.

Do people mistake your facial expressions for emotions that you're not experiencing?

All the time. Even my wife of 16 years still does it and it annoys me big time.

Next time, tell her, "I'm not sad, I'm pissed off, and you're not helping matters!"

<== Then give her the Peter Gabriel evil eye.

"Yes, officer, was I speeding? LOOK DIRECTLY INTO MY EYES."

Yep, all the time.

Even from people who supposedly know me well.

It is very irritating. :x

Occassionally this happens to me... But mainly when I have headache and my expressions just all of a sudden go flat or looking sad, it's the same when I wake up.

"Are you ok? Why do you look vex?" I'm not vex I'm okay, my head just hurts.

Some days, you could use that as an excuse, apparently that works for me whenever my expressions do run flat. :D you pobabpy would get the same annoying thing the postwoman would say to you normally.

All the time! Mum always thinks something's wrong, because of what is apparently a sad expression in my face.
That's just how my face looks when I'm not pulling faces! ^_^

I get asked that question, all the time. That's how I naturally look.

people around me stopped asking after a while because they finally understand that i don't smile very much. I'm not sad, I just don't want to smile.

All the time. I got the nickname "emo kid" a couple years ago because whenever I would shut down in social situations, people thought I was acting sad for attention.

Used to get that a lot from childhood up through my early thirties or so. Either that or "you look mad". Not sure why it stopped - either my looks have changed since then or maybe it's because I make a more conscious effort to try NOT to look sad/mad (or maybe a bit of both?)

wow, yeah. all the freakin' time. my old field hockey coach used to tell me to smile. "why?" would be my answer. after listening to a slew of reasons.... *sigh* grr....

now it's like, your face is making me sad! it's just the way my face falls, like some of you had mentioned.

Just today, I sit down to wait for the train and I am on the laptop. This man comes up to me and asks me "what's wrong?" I looked sad he said and I just laughed. I told him I was fine which was true.
