I was diagnosed with moderate high functioning autism at the old age of 5, but of course had the symptoms way before that (like at 1 or 2). That was over 20 years ago.

I found out about it when I was 20 but at least two people "suspected" somewhere at the early end of the 13-18 range but did not formally diagnose me. One didn't because of my parents, the other didn't because (so he said) he didn't think it would be helpful for me to have a diagnosis. So I chose 13-18, even though I didn't find out until I self-diagnosed and then found out I had been diagnosed earlier, by two people no less.

Since then I have seen someone and had her basically diagnose me within about two minutes of meeting her (before I told her). It never occurred to me it would be that obvious, even to someone trained to look for it.

I now think it ought to have been 6-12 if not earlier (well, I can see why maybe it would not be <6 but definitely not <12) but c'est la vie. Instead it was 13-18 and 18+ before I found out and could do anything about it. I guess I will always wonder how my life would have turned out if it were so. I guess it could have been worse, too....
