Merzbow, Masonna and Government Alpha.

...It's not exactly your standard stuff, but hey, they're still Japanese.

I prefer the old-school traditional/ethnic stuff. Shamisen, biwa, koto, shakuhachi, etc. Cannot stand the j-pop/j-rock/visual-kei kinda stuff. IMO, it's either insipid saccharine pop ballads or that bizarro Japanese take on 'punk'.

I have a thing for underground Japanese neo-psychedelia / folk / space-rock like Ghost and Acid Mother's Temple in particular.

The noise stuff like Merzbow is interesting though I have to be in a very particular mood to listen to it.

Boredoms are great too.

I also enjoy Japanese traditional / ethnic music when I hear it.

I've been meaning to check into the Japanese metal scene as I imagine there is some interesting stuff going on there.

I haven't checked into the Japanese music much but I hear they have some interesting stuff, and a small Goth Scene to boot. :P

The artists from Japan that I like are, Boredoms, D'espairs Ray, Malice Mizer, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Moi dix Mois, and Koda Kumi.

Nice assumption. No, I just don't like Japanese punk. There's also quite a bit of Beethoven and Mozart that I'm not wild about either.

Yeah, missed them... i'm completely disorganised.
Really should start buying the NME now & then (if they don't play Manchester i usually don't know about it).
Anyway, cheers for the recommendation. Will check them out.
