I've been into extreme metal for a while. I'm familiar with most of the classics and essentials of the extreme metal genres, however I'd like to delve into the more obscure stuff and lesser-known gems. I'm not really familiar with what's considered good and I'm aware theres a lot of real crap out there to dig through. I guess to make things easier I'll start with some of the bands I'm familiar with and have enjoyed:

Classic-style Death metal: Death, Possessed, Entombed, Dismember, Bloodbath, Gorguts, Obituary, Infestdead
Technical/Progressive/Melodic Death Metal: Death, Cynic, Meshuggah, At The Gates, Opeth, Gojira, Cryptopsy, Edge Of Sanity
Black Metal: Darkthrone, Immortal, Agalloch, Emperor, Wolves In The Throne Room
Doom Metal: Corrupted, Candlemass, Cathedral, Paramaecium, early Anathema, early Katatonia

As you can see I'm much less familiar with Black and Doom bands and their various sub-genres, but I would like to learn more. I'd also like to know what I'm missing as far as hidden gems in Death Metal.

Can someone help me out? I'd really love expand my musical horizons in these genres.

Also, no neo-nazi bands or anything related to neo-nazis or nazi philosophy or imagery. I've specifically avoided Burzum and related acts for this reason.

Also the more brutal and inaccessible the band is the better.

Also I'd prefer you link stuff on youtube rather than embed it, a bunch of embedded videos cause this old computer to chug in a bad way.

Thanks in advance!

Lets see what all I can dig up for ya. Of note I go more for the atmospheric style stuff, so I don't usually consider lyrics. Also I tend to put up what I feel are their more "Defining" sounds, some of the more balanced tracks.

Periphery: Ragnarok
I would describe the band as mathcore/Djent. So to some it may not be true metal, but that doesn't mean that they aren't worth a listen to. This song is in the middle of their range heavyness wise. They do get to the same level as meshuggah quite often in other songs.

Insomnium - Down with the Sun
One of, possibly my favorite melodic death/Melodic Doom Metal bands. They are very much more on the atmospherics and emotionalness than sheer brutality as well.

Arcturus - Alone
Can't exactly describe them other than as genius'. They are a pretty obscure band with a very unique sound. A lot of their songs are more or less based on literary works. This song being based off of Edgar Allen Poe's work of the same name.

I will probably post more later.

Nile - Technical death metal with lyrics that focus on Egyptology and some HP Lovecraft stories as well. On the brutality side, they have a drummer in George Kollias who drums like a man possessed. In their Darkened Shrines is a classic.

Melechesh - Middle-eastern black metal band who have Mesopotamian/Sumerian and occult influences. The Epigenesis was their most recent album with some epic guitar interplay, and they were once accused of cult activities by Jerusalem authorities 2 decades ago. The charges were dropped.

Watain - Black metal act from Sweden who have all the usual refinements, upside down crosses on fire, dark lyrics and atmosphere and bombastic guitars and drums. Lawless Darkness is worth a listen, and they even described NSBM as a joke after being accused as a Nazi band (which they aren't).

Behemoth - Blackened death metal act from Poland, very loud and very fast. A lot of their music is part black metal and part death metal, with the lyrics mostly about the occult and other dark subject matter.

My Dying Bride - Doom metal act from England, one of the "Peaceville Three" in the 90's. Their music is morbidly slow and has a funereal dirge to it, with lyrics that focus on dark romance, tragedy and death. I would highly recommend their classic Angel and the Dark River album.

Ahh, you beat me to nile.

As for some other choices and examples to expand upon the earlier ones I listed... (just realized I forgot to name the song in each example. The song/band names are still links just like in the previous post.

Wolves in the Throne Room
They are an alright Black Metal/Ambient Metal Act. They have a HUGE doom-metal feel to them as well IMO.

Evoken
One of the the Defining Bands of the Doom Metal Genre

Moonspell
Pretty good Gothic/Folk Tinged Black Metal band.

I will add some post-metal bands because they might just catch your interest as well.
Check out Isis, Neurosis, and Pelican. ((all three have doom metal elements in them as well.)) You might want to take a look at Sunn 0))) as well.

It's up to you to figure if they fit the "extreme" tag or not.

But I wouldn't call them p****-bands.

I'm not really a metalhead, but I do like some really heavy metal, so I'll add my 2c. I pay attention to lyrics, and the majority of the metal bands I listen to are christian (most of the non-christian bands I like have already been mentioned). I hope knowing that doesn't automatically turn you off to them. I'm also not really familiar with identifying subgenres (and don't really care either), so sorry if I mislabel any.

My favorites:
In Flames - (not christian) melodic death metal. Easily my favorite metal band as far as music is concerned, but I wouldn't consider them really extreme. PS: Listen to their older stuff (no later than Clayman), their newer stuff is no longer death metal and is more like hard rock with metal vocals.
- a couple samples:

Becoming the Archetype - progressive death metal

Callisto - sludge metal, I've seen it compared to Isis more than once.

Alethiean - death metal

Master's Hammer, Maniac Butcher, Trollech, Al-Namrood, Goatlord, MasseMord (the Polish one), the Czech, Polish, and Swedish Demiurgs, Xanthochroid, Incubator, Cancer, Carbonized, Tvangeste, Luna Ad Noctum, Opera IX, Cadaveria. These are the ones I can think of at the moment that haven't already been mentioned.

Decapitated are pretty sweet. I found out about them the other day accidently

Some other awesome recommendations in this thread I'll be looking into as well.

Screw all you people who embedded dozens of videos after I'd asked politely to not do that. I can't go into this thread now without my computer temporarily crashing.
