All around me are familiar faces Worn out places, worn out faces Bright and early for the daily races Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses No expression, no expression Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had I find it hard to tell you I find it hard to take When people run in circles, it's a very, very Mad world, mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good Happy birthday, happy birthday And I feel the way that every child should Sit and listen, sit and listen Went to school and I was very nervous No one knew me, no one knew me "Hello, teacher! Tell me, what's my lesson?" Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kind of funny I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had I find it hard to tell you I find it hard to take When people run in circles, it's a very, very Mad world, mad world
Enlarging your world Mad world

It's not simple to say Most days I don't recognize me These shoes and this apron That place and its patrons Have taken more than I gave 'em It's not easy to know I'm not anything like I used to be Although it's true I was never attention sweet center I still remember that girl
She's imperfect but she tries She is good but she lies She is hard on herself She is broken and won't ask for help She is messy but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up And baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone but she used to be mine
It's not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person And makes you believe it's all true And now I've got you And you're not what I asked for If I'm honest I know I would give it all back For a chance to start over And rewrite an ending or two For the girl that I knew
Who be reckless just enough Who can hurt but Who learns how to toughen up when she's bruised And gets used by a man who can't love And then she'll get stuck and be scared Of the life that's inside her Growing stronger each day 'Til it finally reminds her To fight just a little To bring back the fire in her eyes That's been gone but it used to be mine
Used to be mine
She is messy but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone but she used to be mine

There's so many times I've let you down So many times I've played around I tell you now, they don't mean a thing Every place I go, I'll think of you Every song I sing, I'll sing for you When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring

I spent so many nights Just thinking how you've done me wrong I grew strong I learned how to get along
Great song. I number of artists have done great versions. Gloria Gayner's original disco version still packs the dance floor at parties (I used to be a party dj- the song saved me a lot of times). Dianna Ross did a warp speed techno version.
Everybody's been there, everybody's been stared down By the enemy Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing Bow down to the mighty But don't run, stop holding your tongue Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live Maybe one of these days you can let the light in Show me how big your brave is

I like my CAKE version. I'm big on guitar and the horn section at the end.
Gloria Gaynor brings back memories of dancing with my cousin so it's hard to hear.
Brings back memories...in a bad way?
WOW. Thats cute...what Juliette Lewis breaks out into!
Ive noticed that you favored the Cake version before. Curious that your favorite version is only one I am aware of sung by a male lead singer (its kinda thought of as a feminist anthem). Though I like his verison too myself.

I don't think it has to be a feminist song. Anyone can relate to it.
Yes it upsets me to reflect on that night with my cousin in Palm Springs. I wish I could have helped her. It was one of the last times I saw her.

This has nothing to do with breakups, but I watched this YouTuber a lot after my breakup. Very helpful. I guess she helped me figure out who I was again.

A happy sounding hit with angry lyrics supposedly inspired by a real breakup that Donald Fagen had with a gf...are you gathering up the tears? Have you had enough of mine?
