Giving a compliment to a girl.

"You look nice today."

In my mind I mean - today. Because half the time she looks horrible, so instead I say nothing because the hidden meaning seems derogatory. Is this bad? Some days she dresses like a conservative girl, and the other days - fru fru pink dangly chain lovey doveyness. Would the misconception be that people think as much as I do, would this person indeed not really ask "what about the other days?", or would they simply say thank you?

Does anyone have any experiences with compliments gone bad?

Yes, hence why I don't compliment people and instead remind them of their shortcomings....since it's much better tolerated. Welcome to the paradox of our world!

Just say "you look nice" and avoid the word today if you don't want to invite conflict.

If It was me I would just take it as a compliment unless you put extreme emphasis on the word "today" or "nice".

I might have to cut it down to "you look" to avoid the emphasis on nice. My most prudent issue would be "you look nice today" sounds specific, yet "you look nice" denotes interest...

Or just don't put emphasis on the word nice. It's pretty easy.

Well if you don't want anything to do with the person, don't say either.

If someone said "You look nice today" and another person said "you look nice" they could both mean interest.

Very true points. But the fact remains I had a urge to say "you look nice today", which is rare. But I managed to realize, "stop!" before I spoke and rethought the concept.

But have you had any experiences with complimenting? I've rarely tried it.

I don't think most people would say "well what about other days" that will just make them seem anally retentive.

So instead of saying "you smell nice" you should just shorten it to "you smell"? :D

I learned recently to never mention the word 'weight' in a compliment regardless of the context and the intention :(
*Cough** Cough* .

But that compliment would require looking into the eyes. Perhaps "you have nice feet" would make more sense.
