Ok I read the above thread and understand it but I am still utterly lost when it comes to matching. Anyone suffer the same fate or can help me make heads or tails of this?

I think that I'm able to usually manage matching pretty well,
but I kind of just go on instinct. Are you just talking colors, or styles
as well?

Everything I buy has either black or denim in it. For the bottoms I wear solid black or denim. For the tops I use whatever has that colour in it. Hats/caps same. So far so good (I think).

hmm, to a nt, this suggestion might be overkill, but then, you arent a nt: you could try searching the web for color theory basics. mainly things like complementary contrasts, split contrasts, etcetera...

a few base rules (as bruce lee said: follow the rules without being bound by them):
-every color matches black (read: black trousers are a good investment because all kinds of shirts go well with it)
-same goes for white
-avoid colors that are too close to each other (for example, several slightly different shades of red, each with a different texture like matte, glossy and velvet - extremely important when choosing an outfit in one color)
-as soon as colors are apart far enough to be identified as two different colors (denim blue and greenish blue for example), neighbouring colors make a harmony.
-complementary contrasts are tricky to pull off (green-red, blue-orange, etcetera), but not impossible. keeping one color more subdued than the other makes it easier. two intense complementary colors (candy pink plus neon green) are bound to look eighties - in a bad way.

-different patterns should not be combined: dont mix polka dots with stripes
-a solid color plus one patterned item always works (keeping its colors in mind, of course): solid shirt with striped or dotted tie OR patterned shirt with solid tie. mixing patterns is trickier.

yeah... the more neutral a color is, the easier it is to match it (as it has a less dominant color identity, so to say)
yet, two almost the same shades of beige can look off, and i am not too sure about beige plus purple, beige plus candy pink or something like that.

It is best to use colors that are considered opposites:
green and red
orange and blue
yellow and purple
black and white

To this add crazy patterns and Hawaiian shirts. A giant Cat in the Hat hat or a t-shirt with a sarcastic message helps too.

I wear two colors, black and blue (blue jeans with black shirts, I have dozens of different black shirts and blue jeans). Unless its dress clothes, then I go to a store, ask someone to help me, and then when I buy that outfit I keep it together and unaltered. Then again don't take my advice, I don't exactly have a lot of luck in the dating game.

I am very good at colour co-ordination actually... think it comes from growing up with mother who always had colour co-ordinated outfits. But I have become bored of that and so now wear whatever. I like to wear blue with red actually...well white and blue stripes with red cut off trousers.
