There was some genetic mutation found in Africans (I think) that reduced their suceptibility to malaria and/or yellow fever. I can't remember off the top of my head what it is called or exactly what it is, but if I find my notes from last year, I'll post an update. But this condition also made them have a deficiency of one of the minerals that the human body needs. It's mostly a question of whether they will die of the deficiency or of malaria...?

Genetic mutations are interesting things. Too bad bacteria and viruses can mutate, as well. ;)
