Other family members with autism?
My father has many traits of Aspergers, like "textbook", but he is not diagnosed and I am not sure at all, if he even knows about it.
My autism is more severe than his, as he is able to hold down a job for 45 years now (he is specialized in his area, even did inventions, but has no good contact to co-workers), can drive, has children (but does not care at all).
He archieved a lot I did not.
I do not have a lot of contact to him (2 autists, neither of us is calling or making an appointment, see each other only at christmast and easter, when neurotypical part of family is arranging it/ parents divorced).

>dad, informaly identified with aspergers by autism specialists of mine-we clash like crazy because he is a control freak and likes to control the routines of mine which ends up in both of us kicking off.
>sister, informaly identified with aspergers by autism specialists of mine, she was wrongly diagnosed with social anxiety disorder around twenty because her gp was an old fart [wont even go into how much hate him-ex gp of mine] and thought girls coudnt get autism, she is also recognised as having genious inteligence and has synethestia...or however its spelt.
>uncle, informaly identified as on the spectrum by autism specialists of mine; dads brother, we always wonder what relative will kick off and misinterpret what he says next, loads of family hate him but he is actualy a caring guy who lives on his own on the family farm and hand rears lots of animals that have been abandoned by their mums from his herds/flocks-most farmers woud not give a damn,he is also asexual but has been called gay all his life purely because he isnt dragging some woman around all the time like hetros.
>cousin, diagnosed with classic autism, he didnt get diagnosed till eigteen though as ireland is bloody ridiculous for autism awareness and they labeled him with schizophrenia,he is high functioning but went to special school, typical traditional catholic school;they were awful as they punished him for stimming and made him feel like a freak for doing it so he had no way to channel the stuff going on in him and ended up on medication, his biggest impairment is anxiety.
>auntie, informaly identified to be on the spectrum by autism specialists of mine, she is mums sister, she is high functioning but is severely affected, she cant leave the house without her husband and she is a 'crazy cat lady' and hoards homeless cats, but in a caring way; she spends all her food money on them which the husband constantly gives out over.

None of my family members are diagnosed, but I've noticed quite a few. My father and his brothers all have clear signs. Also, their mother showed very clear AS signs. My mother and her brother also exhibit AS signs, along with my own sister. The odd part of all this is that none of my cousins show signs.

Reading this I think, that there is a possibility, that more people from father's side might qualify for autism/BAP, but there is no contact to this side of family at all..........they were just described by neurotypical part of family as being "odd" and worse "crazy" and stuff.......people to "avoid"........
Neurotypical part of family (like mother) does not understand autism at all.
She said, that I have been "normal" until she finally joined my assessment recently (I am diagnosed now for almost 2.5 years, but without "childhood reference", but people assessing me said, it was a clear case).
Now finally the mother did the official childhood-assessment a couple weeks ago and it is clearly autistic (high-scores), but before it was only me being a naughty child = bad character.

I don't know but I do believe that there was, is a lot of undiagnosed mental illness in my family. My dad was somewhat successful working in a family business, but after that he couldn't hold a job. Also one of his brothers, I believe was severely mentally ret*d. I don't think my dad had AS though. He was way too extravert for that. His problem was more alcoholism. Although even when he wasn't drunk, he still had problems.
My mother may have been a good bet for mild AS. She was sociable, but very introvert. She didn't maintain any friendships, except with the people she worked with at the time. She had a lot of talent for art, but didn't do too much with that. She suffered from major depression. Her sister I think was pretty much the same. But they were both very high-fuctioning, and had no problem keeping jobs.
I'm the only one in the family that is totally dysfunctional. So I don't know.
My dad has AS. My grandfather (dad's dad) probably had it but he died before I was born. My cousin (dad's brother's son) shows signs but a diagnosis was denied. My uncle (mom's brother) may have it. I guess I can't be surprised I have AS. My dad's side with the children having AS and my mom's side with its tendency for the children to have characteristics of their aunts/uncles more than their parents (I look like my aunt, her daughter looks like my mom and her son looks like her brother). Basically, I could have gotten double AS genetics.
My older brother and two of cousins (on my dad's side) are officially diagnosed. My mum and I strongly believe that my dad has autism too. My mum also believes that my dad's mum probably also had autism, she finds it strange that despite the fact that I never really knew her (she died when I was very young and didn't live near by) I am very similar to her in my behaviour. Other members of my family also show some traits.
