The End We Start From. I like Jodie Comer a lot, she was great in Killing Eve and great in this more subtle role but I just felt I'd seen everything here before. I'm kind of over apocalypse survival stories, I want something more positive.

Very violent, very bloody, very profane and an excellent film. It is a horror film but about the horrors of classism and individual social status in India.

If you watch this film, watch this film only once because of the level of violence.

The Man Who Would Be King (1975)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073341/

An excellent adventure story based on a Rudyard Kipling yarn.

Stars Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

The Bra

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7791188/

Quote:

To escape from his lonely existence, Nurlan embarks on the most adventurous journey of his life: to find the owner of this perky piece of blue underwear. He rents a small room in Baku and begins his quest.

A rather cute movie from Azerbaijan. There is no spoken dialogue.

Leave the World Behind (2023) on Netflix

Wikipedia has a good description, but in a nutshell, two families are brought together and learn to trust one another while the country, or the world (???), slowly falls apart. The script is good, the acting is annoyingly good (more on that in a bit), the direction, editing and photography; this is a well made photoplay.

The Acting

Julie Roberts plays person that really does not like people. When two people show up at the beautiful vacation rental home where her family is staying and the man says he is the owner, she does not trust him or the young woman who is with him. He (Mahershala Ali) is black and her judgement is definitely racist. Julie Robert's character is very annoying and unpleasant. For future viewers, if you find it unbearably unpleasant, her character does evolve. I stuck with the story hoping that would be the case. She is not the only one who is untrusting and a bit racist.

There are some truly excellent scene of tension, a few times the tension occurs in two locations. By that I mean, something is happening in one location that is tense, and something is happening in another location that is also tense. The whole thing is expertly edited between. Can't take this for granted because there are so many photoplays where it is attempted, but less successful. All my opinion of course.

One note: In the trailer there is a scene with a bunch of white cars clogging a road way. I thought that's weird, they are all white, and all the same model. No one is in the cars. Someone has hacked the Teslas and is driving them into the rear of the other other Teslas. A weird curious moment that turns into one of tense avoidance.

Last night I watched:

Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet [1965]

Gee! Doesn't that trailer make the movie sound good?!

It lies. The movie is quite bad.

Dream Scenario.

A college professor finds he's been appearing in people's dreams in a passive role. He gains a degree of celebrity, till people dream that he's violent. Then his life falls apart in this black comedy.
Enjoyable, but also heart rending.

Three Christs.

Factually based movie in which a psychologist hired on at a psychiatric hospital in the late fifties attempts to cure three schizophrenic men who believe they are Jesus Christ, rather than just locking them away with the occasional shock treatment. Very heartfelt movie.

Last night we watched two movies:

Alien [1979]
<=>"In space no one can hear you scream."

One of the top science fiction movies of all time.

I do not recommend the Director's Cut...apparently neither does the director.

Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies [2012]
<=>"He emancipated the slaves... he saved the Union... and slaughtered the undead!"

It seemed reasonable to watch this film since we'd recently seen Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

My bride allowed as how it was "pretty good" for a zombie film. I'd go as far as "OK".

I can't remember if I posted this already but I've watched Get Back for the third time.
I might need the DVD set.
