Which word would you use? I'd say ones that are green rather than black are better referred to as chalkboards.

In school it was referred to as chalkboard so that's the term I use.

Most chalkboards I saw were green. So "chalkboard". :cat:

I only ever heard it called a blackboard at school so I call them blackboards.

I don't think I've ever had to talk about it in English but in my first language it's called the exact translation of "blackboard". So I'd probably call it a blackboard if I ever talk about it.

In my language both are called just a "board"("tablica").
"School board"("tablica szkolna") if someone wants to be precise.
"Board"/"school board" also works for the big white boards you use markers instead of chalk to write on.
It describes every kind of the big flat thing on wall used by teacher write on during lesson no matter what it is made from and what color it is.

I say blackboard.

It is such a shame that the blackboard is steadily disapparing in the education system. It is being substituted by computer displays/projectors. I don't like this. Especially, subjects like mathematics, physics, and chemistry should be explained by using an old school blackboard. I love the sound, the looks, the smell; it just helps to bring you in that right state of mind.

But the dust of chalk isn't too great to people with asthma and interactive whiteboards don't have that dust.

Blackboard. Even for the green ones. It's the first word I learned for it, and it isn't racist.

What's your first language, if I may ask?

Blackboard, even if its green, because thats what it was called, even by teachers!

I like whiteboards with markers, its much nicer than the dusty chalk residue.

Hi. I try to avoid publicly posting personal information that could give a clue to who I am. I'm paranoid about someone IRL finding out who I am although it is very unlikely to happen. So I can't say here what my first language is but if you are interested enough, I can happily tell it to you by PM.

I grew up with "blackboard." We had to pound the erasers every day.

Yep, I grew up with everyone saying "blackboard" too, even when they started upgrading to the green ones.
