Inspired by the calming sounds thread. I didn't have any that hadn't been listed already so I didn't post in it.

This is for the sounds you can't ignore, block out, or sleep through... the ones that pull your attention away from what you're trying to do no matter what and won't let go.

for me:

distant bass from music downstairs

snoring

ticking clocks

ringing telephones

birds

*shudders*

Alarms of any sort, klaxons, screeching noises, people with annoying voices and repetitive ongoing noises.

WP HAS a search function! It is on the main "discussions" page. Click discussion on the left, and go to the search in the top center.

When I was a kid (and even sometimes now when I am very tired): drums, certain laughs, wind, B and P sounds, the words "bomb" and "ball," and echos would disturb me. However, I was not only bothered by these sounds. I would have panic attacks from them.

I have enumerated these in another thread but I will reiterate:

Car and motorcycle backfire
The heavy bassline of rap music
Persistent beeping noises from computers and microwaves
Bad grammar and mispronounced words (especially if the mispronunciation is bizarre)
The yapping of small dogs (Big dogs aren't a problem. My dog, Partner, in my opinion, sounds as a dog should sound.)
A Siamese yowling at 4 a.m. (However, cats make more effective alarm clocks than any mechanical ones and wake me up in a much more natural fashion. I HATE beeping, as I already stated.)

Cars driving by with that loud bass
Dogs barking
Phones ringing
Anything that beeps
Babies crying
Too many people talking at once
Paper rubbing paper
Pencil scratching on paper
Certain types of music (especially the repetitive sort)
Pretty much all commercials, but especially the ones with those annoying yelling announcers
Anything scraping against metal
Slamming doors

  • Fire alarms
  • Shrill telephone rings
  • Various electronics and electrical circuits that can be heard buzzing faintly at night when I'm trying to fall asleep
  • Snow on televisions and static on the radio or on a cell phone
