Exactly. For years now, schools have been teaching kids what to think, not how to think.

The powers that be spent their tax money on fireworks shows in the Middle East instead of education and healthcare.

One reason I left the states is because social groups there seem to identify themselves more by whom and what they hate than by any other common interest.

It's not just schools. It is almost impossible to find a news article nowadays that reports news without opinions and their own spin on things. Even the ones that appear to be just news (i.e. facts and events) often present those facts in such a way as to influence you to their own opinions.

There are some brilliant Americans.

This topic is kind of insulting. If it’s the public education system that’s no one’s fault but whoever voted for the people in charge.

I didn’t think that attacks were allowed on a group of people. The title of the thread sounds like an attack to me.

It’s saying that a specific group of people is stupid.

I’m not patriotic, but I find attacks on Americans (and other groups of people) tiresome, especially since it happens a lot. What if we switched out Americans to a different demographic? Would it be allowed then? I doubt it.

In the guidelines:

Quote:
It is acceptable to say that Republicanism, Liberalism, Christianity, Islam are stupid but not acceptable to make generalised attacks saying that Republicans, Liberals, Christians or Muslims are morons. You could say that some of these people are stupid because of (reason) but not make generalised attacks on groups of people. Similarly you could not say "Christians are morons" or "Muslims are terrorists" or "People on welfare are bums". Confine your attacks to the beliefs and politics, not the people holding them. The one exception to this is public figures themselves – by the very nature of their roles they are personally open to criticism.

People can critique institutions and ideologies without insulting groups of people.

I can honestly say I have dumbed down because of how instant things are these days. Food, entertainment, even studying have easy access. Going to an actual library always brings me back to a slower, simpler time.

I actually see this more as social commentary than an attack on Americans. However it's an American commentator addressing a group of Americans (although Washington is on the border so yeah there could have been one or two Canadians there). The same scenario could occur in many other large countries except perhaps hyper-patriotic countries in which the person speaking might be accused of treason.

This may be more about the fact that America is so large and culturally isolated that Americans often assume problems in their society are somehow uniquely American. This may have become worse after WWII when many Americans, beginning with my parents' generation, travelled to Europe and experienced things they thought superior such as bidets or Haute Cuisine and started putting down aspects of their domestic culture. Despite the fact that most of them would have become profoundly homesick if they had to live in any one of those countries for more than a few months, especially back then when Europe was still recovering from the War and life for most people was pretty basic.

^ The title is saying that Americans are stupid which is breaking the PPR guidelines.

It’s okay to criticize institutions and ideologies, not people.
