Is it true that high functioning people with diagnosed autism spectrum disorder don't land in psychiatric hospitals, social welfare homes etc.?

Higher functioning autistic folk are less likely to land in those places/situations, but may do so for brief periods in times of crisis, even if they are at others times, high functioning.

Yep. They're less likely to compared to lower functioning autistics but I suspect they're more likely to compared to the general NT population. The higher fuctioning autistics who go there tend to have other issues in addition to autism.

Yeah... usually co-morbid mental health issues/mood instability.

many undiagnosed individuals struggle with the label of being "atypical" schizophrenic, bipolar, depressive, etc... they don't respond to the usual treatments because their diagnosis is incorrect.

Once we learn of our autism, we can often make changes to our way of living that helps us cope with the stress and distresses of every day life. Suicide risk winds many of us up in psychiatric care, admissions for women age 30 to 60 is much higher for suicidal behavior and on screening most of these individuals show enough signs of autism for diagnosis.

Autistic women have a 7x greater risk of suicide than the average population.

Finding out we are autistic can help give us self understanding and understanding of others that we missed in the past.
