An interesting fact about the King of Hearts. In addition to being named after Charlegmane the Holy Roman Emperor, his other nickname is "The Suicide King" because in many card decks he is drawn holding a sword behind his head as if he is trying to stab himself.

This website explains how this design came to be over the years from a logical standpoint.

But from an esoteric standpoint I view this card in two ways:

A) As a man who "sacrifaces himself" for the happiness and safety of his loved ones.

B) A man with a damaged mind who thinks more with his heart than with his intellect (like me at times  ).

What would happen if the King of Hearts wed the Queen of Spades? :chin:

:king: :queen:

https://youtu.be/OlKWJTGw2PY?si=hKos-CqddqbJiRbx

There was a friendly but naive king
Who wed a very nasty queen
The king was loved but
The queen was feared
Till one day, strolling, in his court
An arrow pierced the kind king's heart
He lost his life and...
His lady laughed

:skull:

Such a possibility of kind-hearted but depressed king being wed to a malicous queen who plots his death also reminds me of this intro to the video game "Trapt".

But seriously. What I admire about the King of Hearts is he's the kind of rare ruler who actually has kindness and compassion for his people. Our world needs more of that.

So do all the cards tell a story when you put them together

Well in my mind they do at least when focusing on the court cards (kings, queens, and the jacks aka knaves) .

Each one has a real nickname based on a historical, mythological, or biblical figure that in my mind tells its own interesting story.

I prefer "Charlegmane" (King of Hearts) and "Athena" (Queen of Spades) myself simply because to me they represent the kind of men and women who have always existed in our society thtoughout time who never fit into the structured gender norms.

The King of Hearts usually is not depicted weilding his sword in a battle postion like the other kings. He's hiding his sword because he doesnt really want to fight. He's the kind of king who shows empathy and compassion towards others which since ancient times these traits were highly frowned on in boys and men as we are the ones expected to be "stoic" and "act like a man" in the face of hardship.

The Queen of Spades on the other hand, unlike the other three queens who only hold pretty flowers to symbolize their passiveness, she holds a flower AND a scepter in her hand with a tight grip symbolizing her authority and her desire to hold power with or without a king by her side (after all she is the "widow" card). She's essentialy the kind of woman most people would degrade as a "b***h" but she would wear that title with a kind of pride.
