A shooting and fire were reported Friday night at a large concert hall near Moscow.

Russian news agencies reported at least three people wearing camouflage opened fire at the Crocus City Hall.

The number of injuries is unclear, but video footage published on Russian social media channels showed chaotic scenes, with a large crowd of concertgoers attempting to flee.

Firefighters have evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building and efforts are underway to rescue people from the roof, Russian emergency officials said.

horrifying. Looks to be the work of Chechnyan Terrorists at this point, more info still coming in. Embassies /foreign citizens were warned a while ago not to attend any public gatherings, evidently this act of terrorism was somewhat expected, though of course nobody knew where or when it would happen. still watching the news outlets

ISIS claims responsibility for attack in busy Moscow-area concert venue that left at least 40 dead

Quote:
ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack at a popular concert venue complex near Moscow Friday that left at least 40 dead and more than 100 wounded after assailants stormed the venue with guns and incendiary devices.

The terror group took responsibility for the attack in a short statement published by ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram on Friday. The group did not provide evidence to support the claim.

Video footage from the site of the attack, the Crocus City Hall concert venue, shows the vast complex, which is home to both the music hall and a shopping center, on fire with smoke billowing into the air. State-run RIA Novosti reported the armed individuals “opened fire with automatic weapons” and “threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb, which started a fire.” They then “allegedly fled in a white Renault car,” the news agency said.

The attack unfolded before the music group Picnic was set to perform, according to Russia 24. The band’s manager told state media that the performers were unharmed.

Video footage showed panic as the attack unfolded, with crowds of people huddling together, screaming and ducking behind cushioned seats as gunshots started echoing in the vast hall.

Footage geolocated by CNN shows an armed individual starting at least one fire inside the venue. The individual is seen carrying something in their hand and, as they walk off-screen, a bright flash of light from a large flame is seen in the video.

On Friday night, Moscow City Duma Chairman Alexey Shaposhnikov called on Moscow residents to donate blood to help treat victims, saying that “this is a matter of life and death for dozens of people.”

Around 100 people were evacuated from the building by firefighters, TASS reported. Rescuers are still working to get people off the roof, according to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation.

Earlier this month, the US embassy in Russia said it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow,” including concerts. The embassy warned US citizens to avoid large gatherings.

In a speech Tuesday to Russia’s federal security agency, Putin called the embassy’s warnings about potential terror attacks in Moscow “provocative,” saying “these actions resemble outright blackmail and the intention to intimidate and destabilize our society.”

Ukraine, which has been embroiled in a war with Russia for more than two years, denied having any involvement in the attack.

“Ukraine has never resorted to the use of terrorist methods,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote, in part, in a post on X. He said he believed Russia would use the attack to justify the ongoing conflict and scale up operations as part of “military propaganda” in Ukraine.

Do they have some specific beef with Moscow (perhaps over Chechnya)?

Or are they just flexing their muscles to show that theyre still around (and Russia is just a random infidel country they can use as a target)?

NBC News live updates

Quote:
Russia has arrested 11 people, including all 4 gunmen suspected of carrying out the attack at a crowded concert venue in a Moscow suburb last night, the head of the country's Federal Security Service (FSB) has told President Vladimir Putin.

At least 115 people are now known to have been killed as more bodies were found in the rubble, Russia's Investigative Committee said this morning. Men in camouflage broke into the concert hall, opened fire, and set the crowded venue ablaze. The death toll is expected to rise.

The terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility but did not provide proof of the claim. U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News that they had been gathering intelligence for months that ISIS could mount a mass casualty attack in Russia, though no final assessment had been made yet about who was responsible. U.S. embassy officials issued a warning earlier this month urging people to stay away from large gatherings.

Russia's culture ministry cancelled public events nationwide, and the Moscow metro has boosted security with police patrols, passenger inspections, and a video analytics system scanning for the faces of suspects on the wanted database.

The attack was carried with automatic weapons as well as with "a flammable liquid," the Russian Investigative Committee said. Firefighters evacuated people from the basement and roof of the building, according to emergency officials.

Putin says a 'window' was prepared on Ukrainian side for attackers' escape
Putin condemned yesterday's attack as a "barbaric terrorist act" in a public address today as he alleged that a "window" had been prepared "on the Ukrainian side" to help the attackers escape.

The Russian leader did not provide evidence for the claim, but cited preliminary data in Moscow's ongoing investigation into the deadly attack.

Russian officials have said the attackers were planning to escape across the Russia-Ukraine border following the assault. Kyiv has denied having any role.

Putin said medics were still fighting to save the lives of those wounded in the attack, which he said has prompted officials in Moscow and several other regions to introduce new anti-terrorism measures.

He said tomorrow, March 24, would be a national day of mourning for the more than 115 people killed.

Heard on some news clip that the USA warned Russia of an imminent terrorist attack a couple weeks earlier and 4-5 days before Putin addressed it and said it was propaganda. Now Russia is blaming the USA, saying their warning was a threat and ISIS - if they pulled the trigger - is a puppet of the USA. Typical propaganda wars.

The death toll is now 133. Wow.

Since we pulled out and allowed the Taliban to take over Afghanistan ...the Taliban itself is now been embroiled in a war of counterinsurgency with...ISIS. And now Putin has been humiliated by ISIS by this attack.

Two parties we dont like happened to be victims. But obviously ISIS isnt really a tool of the US. Would be nice if it were.

We could sick ISIS on the Houhti rebels, and sneak them into Gaza to fight HAMAS.

Not how ISIS work. Case in point, ISIS funded a terrorist attack in Sri Lanka several years ago. The local islamic state operatives in Sri Lanka wanted to retaliate against buddhist militants who were responsible for blowing up mosques and muslim shops in Colombo. But the caliphate based in the middle east weren't interested in buddhist targets. Instead they manouvered to attack christian churches (technically this didn't make sense since buddhist militants were also harassing christians in Colombo). The christians were drawn from the poorest elements of Colombo society and attacking them is like planning a terror attack on a slum, But they went ahead and killed 150 innocent christians who were technically natural allies of the muslim community due to having a common foe (the Buddhists).

Ever wondered why muslims around the world joined islamic state to fight the Syrian government but nobody cares to help Rohingya muslims being murdered by Buddhist Burmese army in western Burma or Uygher muslims being murdered by the Chinese government. You would think ISIS would support islam right? but no....

Nice rant. ^

But only tangentally related to my post.

I guess I triggered a tirade in you about a slightly different subject. Lol!
But I will get back to that.

I was talking about ISIS's acts of late....which happened to be against everyone. Some infidels (like Russia) and some fellow Muslims ( last october ISIS attacked an Iranian mosque), as well as their turning the tables on the Taliban and becoming the new insurgents there.

Like Iran all of the Iran's allies (like Houti Rebels sinking shipping in the Red Sea) are Shiite, and ISIS is Sunni. So to ISIS even those "fellow Muslims" are "infidels". So in my joke scenario (based upon Putin's dumb statement) the US could exploit ISIS to kill Houghti Rebels. Though I admit that HAMAS in Gaza are probably mostly Sunni ...but are now allied to Iran as well.

But to change the subject back to your rant about Jihadist groups in general of the last thirty years(Al Queda as well as ISIS) yes they do seem to cherry pick which infidels to avenge against. And thats exactly my point. If the US were really the great puppet master that Putin claims we are then...the US would have created a new Ben Ladin to avenge the current Chinese oppression of the Muslim Uighurs by... by recruiting suicide pilots to fly airlines into Shanghai sky scrapers ala 9-11 long ago. But the Muslim militants have been rather silent about the plight of the Uighurs. China is powerful and has one group (the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan)over a barrel because of trade deals. But neither Burma nor Sri Lanka have that kinda power, and yet they still get away with anti Muslim violence without a Jihad revenge. Go figure.

Although focusing on Assad in Syria actually makes sense because the civil war there seemed to indicate a power vacuum giving them a shot at controlling a whole country (and indeed ISIS did rule a sizable chunk of Syria and Iraq as a defacto nation for some years).
