Has anyone ever heard of this?

I was labeled as being it when I was in elementary school. I don't know if it was true I really had it or if it was one of those mislabels I had. I never even asked my mother about it.

But it's more than one mental condition or physical. Helen Keller was an example of being multi handicapped because she was blind and deaf.

my iep had me as multiply handicapped: hard of hearing and emotionally disturbed.

if they were to do that over today i guess it would be hard of hearing and autistic. *shrugs*

Yes, I have heard of it. Several of the kids in the school I am interning at have that label.

Don't you have a hearing impairment, Spokane Girl? I would assume that the multiply-handicapped label referred to the hearing impairment and the PDD.

When I was a baby I did. My autism label was changed to autistic behavior when I was four or five because of my history of hearing loss.

I never got dxed with anything until I was in my 20s. And I haven't had a regular doc in 2 years. But here's my current list:

1. Depression
2. Cyclothymia
3. General Anxiety Disorder
4. Panic Disorder
5. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (atypical)
6. Agoraphobic (mild)
7. Attention Deficit Disorder
8. Hypermobility
9. Tachycardia
10. Asthma
11. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
12. Lactose Intolerance
13. Sciatica
14. Bursitis
15. Astigmatism
16. Hyperverbal
17. Hypervigilant
18. Voluntary nygstagmus
19. Asperger's Syndrome (almost forgot that one!)

Plus I have stress induced heartburn and vertigo, lower back problems (I broke my tailbone in the 7th grade on a lake), mild paranoia, periodic insomnia, and experience musical hallucinations when I'm really tired.

Probably I also have Auditory Processing Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, mild dyslexia, dyscalculia, night paralysis . . . *sigh*

I have depression and general anxiety disorder. I suppose that makes me multi-handicapped, though not as severely as being blind and deaf!

I don't like that term. It seems to often be used as a euphemism for something else, and is so vague as to be meaningless. Just about as vague as "singly handicapped" would be.

They don't usually use the term "multi-handicapped" for similar or related types of conditions. It really refers to more than one category of impairment, like a physical impairment and a neurological one like autism. Or a sensory impairment (blindness/deafness) and serious mental illness. It usually indicates that a kid has more complex needs, and requires more extensive interventions requiring multiple types of professionals.

I agree. I hate it when a kid's file says "multiply handicapped." It tells me nothing useful at all.

So it is possible to have 16 or more conditions.
