It hurts whenever I watch televangelist shows with my mother. Those shows drive me up the wall because they remind me of how much my mother has changed since she got back in touch with a cousin of hers and took up her strong christian beliefs.

Those shows just remind me of certain moments in which she's used her religion to tell me/have the cousin tell me hurtful things about the way I live my life and how my friends are soulless (most of them are non-christian), among other things.

I know I haven't been the best child in the world- I am always plugged into my iTouch because I've had my cousin and her talk degradingly about my fashion sense when I'm in the back of the car. I can't hold small talk like she can either. She bonds so well with people and expects it of me, but I can't do it as well- I can do a facsimile of her performance but nothing more.

I don't know where this whole rant is going, but am I not being tolerant by not wanting to watch those shows with her? I just can't stand them, and I don't want to hurt her by telling her again that I can't stand televangelists and I hate the way that she's changed since she's started watching them.

Let me put it this way: It's not your fault that your mother is an idiot.
Perhaps not the most polite way to put it, but it frankly takes an idiot to think there's any truth to a single sentence to ever jump out of the mouth of a televangelist.
You should feel no shame about having a problem with televangelists. Televangelists are a problem. That's just simple fact.
You are not a monster.

I agree, your mom is the problem. Some forms of "Christianity" are just repulsive. Since she's watching televangelists, I presume she's into that awful "Prosperity Gospel" crud where God will give you a new car if you give money to the televangelist. It sounds like she's really judgmental, too, which is typical for fundie Christians, they say "only God can judge" and then tell the target why he's evil and is going to hell unless he gives money to televangelists and buys all of Tim LaHaye's books. (If your mom isn't into LaHaye yet, you're lucky. It won't last.) The best thing to do is to go through her motions, go to church and pray and all that crap, until you can get out.

No, I'm the monster. You couldn't possibly be more of a monster than me.

You could tell her that it's cannibalism, and on Easter! How's that for timing? Easter is when they took Jesus down from the cross and they ate him.

On second thought, maybe don't tell her. Just remember this, though and it can be your little secret when you silently laugh about it. Look, I have nothing against Jesus, really. It's just that I'm not sure we should be cannibalizing him. And even if all he said is so, what's it got to do with guys going on TV to collect money from people who mostly have less of it than they do?

Absolutely nothing in your post makes you sound like a monster.

You need to tell her how you feel. You need to tell your mom that she is being hurtful and disrespectful towards you and that tolerance is a two-way street and that the way you are does not make me less of a person. If she were a true loving mom she would have more respect for you than that instead of demeaning you for not wanting to watch certain shows with her.

No, you are not a monster. Televangelists aren't proper Christians. I don't have a problem with proper Christians--the ones who actually follow the teachings of Christ. I bet you could pick up a bible and find a load of things they do which are against his teachings. Wasn't he supposed to be all about forgiveness and kindness and not judging others? Wasn't he against material wealth?

From a Christian talk-a-holic viewpoint (Which your mom probably possesses), yes, you are a monster. But, from an objective truth-seeking tolerance-seeking viewpoint, she is the monster. We are all monsters from someone's viewpoint and it's beyond any adolescent's control whom they happen to live with and what viewpoint they possess.

Btw, if you are a monster, I definitely like your type of monster more than others.

How about these monsters?

Chickens with human hands!

"A terrifying yet fairly common theme in vintage Easter cards is the chicken with human hands. These hybrid monsters roam painted pastorals, using their opposable thumbs in ways their dinosaur ancestors could only dream about."

*I am Mormon, so I don't watch televangelists shows (but I have seen some, and they are fake)
*I have non-mormon friends, and they are some of the nicest people I know.....the question is, are they making good decisions. I am not going to go into the minutia of details, but look at the heart of your friends, if they are good stand up for them, if they are bad (sorry, but it is the right thing to do), break up with them. Don't let other people make the decisions, also, see if they are following the life-path that you want for yourself.
*I listen to my ipod when my parents lecture me, trust me, it is good for anger management
*You need to decide for yourself what religion is right for you, study it out (be informed) , pray and ask God (or whoever you pray to, but I am just assuming), then stick to your wits

Not to get into a theological discussion here, but "the teachings of Christ" is a very iffy subject, considering the Bible describes Christ at varying points as teaching very different things. For example, there's the whole being nice thing, but then there's the bit about how to beat your slaves (not "not to beat your slaves", mind you, but "how"). Some supposed teachings of Christ are friendly and reasonable, while others are not. That happens when you've got various authors trying to retell the life of a guy who died a good while before they were born and was not well documented in his own lifetime (if he even existed to begin with, and was indeed one person and not an amalgamation of various preachers, activists and fabrications, which is also uncertain).

This is exactly why I don't buy any of it, personally.
I didn't know about the slave thing. I thought all that kind of stuff was in the OT.

I'm not at all seeing where you would come across as a monster. I was expecting a tale of how maybe you set your house on fire during a meltdown, or became angry with someone and slashed their tires or something, but don't be so hard on yourself! Especially not over other people being ignorant.

I also have an extremely religious parent who falls for such things. I've come to see it as her own problem, almost like an addiction. It doesn't make her less of a person, it's just unhealthy.
