I guess you could be a nerd who has Asperger's and you can have Asperger's and not be a nerd, but how would a person who was a picked-on nerd know if they had Asperger's too?

To the OP: In my experence, if you think (For a decent amount of time) you might have AS.....you have a good shot at meeting the DX critera.

I'm not sure if that answers your question.

A lot of people take the linked Aspie Quiz to help determine if they're on the Autism spectrum. It's a little long (eye quiz and 150 questions) but could be worth it in the end.

I think sensory issues and stimming are also big issues.

(although 'normal' people stim, too. we just do it more)

Best quick, accurate diagnostic instrument i have seen on these forums is the MBTI (Link) test.

If a person ends up as I * T * then the person is probably on the spectrum. There were this thread a while ago that listed pretty much the majority of the people here as I * T *.

(* = being wildcard)

There must be something to it, since I have scored the same over the years despite being in various situations and in different states of mind while taking the test.

An autistic brain processes reality in a different way than a non-autistic brain. It's not so difficult to understand if a nerd has AS or not, after all.

The problem is...the concept of a "nerd" has been coflated with what is now called "Aspie" for decades, and the two are hopelessly confused. Add to that the issue that the standards to "determine" AS are difficult to pin down, and you have confusion.

How about this....you are more likely to find Aspies in "nerd" populations.

Maybe I have the old conception of autism, since I was diagnosed many years ago, but experts have always told me that the autistic brain processes reality (therefore also informations) in a different way. For me it's true. I view reality in a different way than how most people do, and probably because of this my way of thinking seems incoherent to the mojority of people.
