I'm not sure what sense you're using 'arch conservative' in here, IIRC JP2 was fairly progressive as popes go. Also, I think the working theory is that his attempted murder was Soviet in origin, as he did quite a lot to embarrass them in his interactions with the Polish Solidarity movement, and the man that shot him was a known contract killer with contact with the Bulgarian government.

John Paul II may have started out with an air of openness, but in later years that was dispelled.
As for the Soviet plot in connection to John Paul's association with Solidarity -that is very likely.
