dating sites are fraud period
Women are very much more social than men, by the time a woman fails socially so badly that she reverts to a dating site something is very, very wrong.
Or she's on the spectrum and can be a really tough nut to crack.
My 60-year-old mother met an amazing guy last year on Plenty of Fish, and now they're talking about getting married. And I'm sitting here trying to imagine *anyone* more social than my mom. :) Mom says that the modern dating scene confuses her.
Exactly my point. Thanque.

Your point was that being confused by the modern dating scene means that something is very, very wrong with a woman? Those are some high standards you have there.

I've had a positive experience from women I've met on PoF and OKC. I've had quite a few dates; one I dated for some time. A girl I met a few months ago, we got along great and then one day said she didn't think we would be more than friends. I'm glad she was honest. We're friends on Facebook and that's fine with me.
I'm very nervous with women who have children already, but given my age, I'm likely going to have to get over it.
There's limited money to be made in FREE dating sites like OKCupid and POF -- so it's pretty hard to get ripped off by a service you're not actually paying for.
It also sounds like your EXTREMELY bitter, defensive & over-entitled, which girls can likely sense from your profile and/or the messages you send them.
Something like 30% of folks have met their partners online in the past 10-15 yrs. what are YOU doing wrong?

Wrong? I got married before the online dating sites existed.
I've been on Match for about 6 months, and it's been pretty dry so far. I send about 3-4 messages to men a week and maybe hear back from a very small percentage. So either I'm doing something wrong, or I'm just not that attractive to them. I get messages from about 1 or 2 guys a week, but when I look at their profiles, I can't see that we have anything in common. It's pretty frustrating, but maybe i need to lower my standards a bit or reassess what I'm looking for (at this point it would be great to go out on an actual date with a guy I can see myself having a conversation with!).

Dating sites advertise themselves as being able to solve the problems of people who are lonely. A lot of people who are lonely have really serious problems, though.
Now, some sites are literally fraudulent. There are a lot of scams out there. Some sites are essentially romanticised social networking sites, and can be used for some good, but it's obviously never as easy as they pretend.
My two cents are to avoid dating sites if you're not looking for friends. It's a whole lot easier finding friends online, and it's a whole lot easier to find dates in the meat world - if you can muster up the courage to talk to women. Not saying I have. But when I do, it'll be more useful than making myself depressed by getting ignored on a dating site.
