An enclosed play area for a teenage pupil with learning difficulties and autism, which was described as a "cage" by his MSP, has been removed.

Of course it had to be removed. They forgot to build the kennel inside it for him....

The family raised money to provide a play area for their eighteen year old son. This is what the school built:

This makes me so angry. Honestly. This is what they think of us. This is how little care was shown, even after his family raised the money to do it. And it happened months ago., And the school has yet to bother to provide an appropriate play area.

The kid could have the tendency to wander off but geez isn't that what fences are for? You build them around the school yard. Little kids (toddlers and babies) also tend to wander off and we don't put them in cages. Instead they have a huge yard with a fence around it.

What is he? A gerbil? There's barely enough space in that thing to pace back and forth. The family says they raised money for a much larger space that would include decking and play equipment. Maybe somebody embezzled the money. Responsible schools handle the issue of students bolting into the street by building a tall fence around a normal-size play area. Clearly that's what the family was envisioning and paid for.

CRYING out loud... I hope the family get their money back. I literally wouldn't let a dog live in a cage like that.

For F*cks sake (and I don't swear.) What the F*ck were the school playing at?

What's next? Are they going to put him on a leash and have him run back and forth along a cable?

That is just so wrong.

WTF??? They provide nothing for five years, and now he's reached school leaving age they build this???

He must be quite severely disabled if at 18 he's unable to manage his own risks if he wanders. This is the Isle of Lewis, not some inner city. If his wandering can be managed safely he'd be better off being allowed to explore.

I read it in the newspaper. Very sad :(
Is this what people think about autistic people? I totally freaked out when I read it, can someone actually be that stupid and ignorant to do something like that?
What upsets me a lot is, that the newspaper I read it in, called the boy mentally ret*d in the headline :( why do people don't get it, that autism is not a form of retardation?
