please dont judge it too harshly, both my english teachers loved it and so did my Floral Design teacher and one of the schools security, who is the mother of my friend Dom the only other autistic kid i know in person, so im hoping to get good reviews on here. i was told i should get it published in my towns newspaper but idk if im ready for that.

AUTISM
By: Brandon King

Autism, the bane of my existence;
I survive only through sheer persistence;
When my life seems to slip away;
I try ever harder to make the battle sway
In my favor for if I lose;
I will be faced with my peers jeers and boos’.
As much as I hate you, dear autism;
I love you all the same, dear autism;
For if you ever were gone;
I still would never be one;
For you are as much a part of me as I am to myself;
I love you, dear autism, but I hate you all the same;
All I can do is keep trying my best;
Love the good times and forget the rest;
In the end I must keep you at bay;
So that I will win this fray;
In this strange love/hate relationship I will forever have with you, my dear autism.

for any NTs who read this or aspies who cant understand poems this poem means that my autism to me is both a gift and a curse, it means that no matter how bad it kills my social life i still dont agree with groups like Autism Speaks who are trying to "cure" it because its an essential part of my personality and me and to "cure" it if its even possible would be to kill who i am and replace it with an imposter thats completely different than who i am

when i showed the poem to my english teacher i had last year she described it as philosophical in its meaning lol

You do realize that any decent critique is honest and tells you exactly what you're getting wrong, don't you?

That said, I liked this poem, since it comes close to summarizing my own feelings on my AS.

It's basically my philosophy on Autism. How much are you willing to lose for that which you will gain? In other words, are you willing to give up the good to take away the bad? It's one package. Good work TK.

That's how I view it as well, a love/hate thing. I really like how you got the words to rhyme, although the "dear autism" is a bit repetitive. Overall I like :thumleft:
