Autreat 2011's call for proposals has been published:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt155197.html

This year's theme is 'Living Life the Autly Way'.

Are you submitting a proposal this year?
If so -
How does your proposal relate to the 'Living Life the Autly Way' theme?
(I think it doesn't have to relate to it. I'm not sure).

Autreat is a retreat-style conference run by Autism Network International ( http://www.ani.ac ), for autistic people and our families, friends, supporters, and interested professionals. We are accepting presentation proposals for Autreat 2011, to be held Monday-Friday, August 8-12, 2011, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania (approximately 75 miles from the nearest major airport at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

Is there somebody we can go to and find out whether something is an appropriate topic (i.e., "likely to be useful to a decent number of people")?

I'm thinking about putting something together on how to prepare for natural disasters, from power outages to major stuff, but I'm not sure whether that's autism-specific enough. There are extra issues for autistics, but a lot of it would be stuff that NTs need to know as well.

Of course, all of this is contingent on my figuring out how to travel to a different state and find someone to feed my cats. :roll:

Yes, go to the Autreat Information mailing list: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/autreatinfo/
You will get answers over there.

Are you thinking about something similar to the presentation "Planning for Disaster", from Autreat 2008?
You can read about it here:
http://www.autreat.com/aut08presentations.html
(It is the last presentation in the list).

Traveling to a different state is easy. You either take Amtrak, or a greyhound.
Finding someone to feed your cats is also easy. Ask one of your neighbors to do it.
If one of your neighbors is a reliable kid, then perhaps pay him a few dollars for feeding your cats.

AUTREAT AIMS TO BE WELCOMING AND RELEVANT TO THE BROADEST POSSIBLE CROSS-SECTION OF THE AUTISTIC POPULATION.

Autreat is attended by autistic people who speak and by autistic people who do not speak;

by autistic people who communicate fluently and by autistic people who have limited communication;

by autistic people who live independently and by autistic people who need intensive support with daily living;

by autistic people who have jobs and by autistic people who live on disability benefits;

by autistic people who are able to present as "socially acceptable" and by autistic people who require support to help them manage their behavior;

by autistic people who have been labeled "high-functioning" and by autistic people who have been labeled "low-functioning"--including some autistic people who have had *both* labels, at different times or under different circumstances.

While it is not expected that any one presentation will be of interest to each and every autistic person, we do look for presentations that will appeal to the widest possible audience.

We are *not* interested in presentations that reinforce what we consider to be artificial distinctions between members of our community who are labeled "low-" vs. "high-functioning."

How come most answers to the poll above are "Autreat? What's that?".
Do WrongPlanet members really don't know what Autreat is all about?
Or are they just joking?

I am still wondering about this.

Hey, Ken, have you ever thought about bring your conventions on tour, like for example, host Autreat or Autscape in different cities like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, High Point, NC (sorry, that was a personal one) every couple of weeks?

Do you really mean every couple of weeks? Or every couple of years?

It takes a whole year to organize events such as Autreat and Autscape. Therefore, having them in different cities every couple of weeks is impossible.

High Point, NC, is very close to Autreat 2011. (about 300 miles, I think).
Most people who attend Autreat travel much longer distances in order to get to Autreat.
Some drive a few days from the West Coast or from Canada, others fly many hours from various parts of the world, etc.

Yeah, it seems like most people here aren't familiar with it. There were some people from WP at Autreat last year, but many of them have ceased posting here. I have asked who was coming to Autreat last year and when the thread elicited no response for several hours, I deleted it.

As for proposals, I won't be doing any just yet, but maybe I will think of something in the future. I am planning on attending this year, though, if I can make it.

Why did you delete it?
