Need to be thrown into a shark tank.

It always happens when I'm trying to concentrate. I'm trying to do an assignment in class, listen to a lecture, or I'm taking a test and someone is being irritating. They're either shaking their foot too much (it's distracting to the eye) or they're clicking their pen or pencil over and over again. I could be in the ~zone~ but once these things happen I look up in complete DISBELIEF. And then I look around and wonder why no one else is noticing this NOISE. It always feels like I'm the only one aware of it. It's infuriating!

I think once in my ceramics class, we were gathered around the professor's table so that she could show us how to do something--and this woman next to me had a habit of bouncing repeatedly on her feet. It was DISTRACTING. I couldn't pay attention. All I saw was her being annoying and I got so fed up one day that I walked up to her and told her to STOP!

Am I the only one that feels this type of irrational anger? IDK why it bothers me so.

You're not the only one--I've got an Aspie friend IRL who is just driven wild by that kind of thing. I deliberately bought some non-click-type pencils to use when I'm around her, because I know all too well how it sets her teeth on edge and I'd prefer not to add more to the stress load.

These sort of things make me very distressed. My best friend does this a lot of the time to me and I have actually responded with violent outbursts on several occasions.

Visual stuff can also trigger it.

Wow, I can relate to this. Yesterday my friend was wiggling his foot and I attacked him and he fell on the floor. I didn't consciously think "I'm going to attack you", I just lashed out.

I think this is the main reason why I dislike my stepfather. He likes to make annoying sounds with his mouth or he clicks to tap on things. It's so annoying!! !

Those things do distract me, but I cannot get too angry about it as I do a lot of that myself. Can't say what exactly it is that causes it and if I catch myself then I may stop but its not garantee that I will be come conciously aware of it to stop.

I don't want to be thrown in a shark tank though, that could be unpleasent.

I'm surprised I've never heard the word "misophonia" before. If it's ever applied to anyone in the history of the world, it's me. People simply don't understand when I try to explain to them that it's not just loud or high pitched noises that drive me insane. It can be very quiet ones as well. I would rather listen to a jackhammer than someone clicking a pen, rocking in a squeaky chair, breathing audibly, etc.

I plead guilty. Please tell me they're whale sharks.

Amusingly, this is probably one of the reasons why an Aspie community would fail horribly. The stims of one Aspies induce meltdowns in others. I make all kinds of sounds, but I am still very much annoyed when others do it. I feel like such a hypocrite over it, too.

Yea, I can be too much to handle too. I guess we're all hypocrites

I'm guilty of this too. What is funny is it bothers me when other people do it, but not when I do it myself. Half the time I don't realize I'm doing it and then after a few minutes I kind of come back to the 'real world' and realize I've been clicking my pen. Then I try to stop but thinking about it will just drive me nuts and I feel like I have to click it just one more time... though I try to do it slowly and see if it is possible to not make it click (...its not).

I also like to completely take my pens apart and rebuild them over and over again. I count the parts and determine how many different possible ways there are to assemble and disassemble the pen and try each way sometimes.

Is the rolleyes intended to be sarcastic? I was being quite serious. Noises which soothe others stress me and the other way around.

I confess. I am a pen clicker. I use it like a stim while I'm thinking. Honestly, I know people can hear it, but it never occored to me that it might cause anyone discomfort. Sorry.

That's how I am. I'll often realize I'm doing something and think, "Man, this would piss me off if someone else was doing it."

People get so mad at me when I do this, but I love the sound of pens clicking. Nowadays, I do my best to refrain from it when I'm in public. :D
