I found this on tumblr and I thought it was funny, and interesting.

People you will
meet in
discussions about
sexism on the
internet:

interstellardiamond.tumblr.com

• Mr “Welcome to the real world”. Sexism happens. Always has, always will. Might as well suck it up and deal with it. Try to change society? What are you, mad? I don’t like it either, sunshine, but just be good and don’t make a fuss.

• Mr “Oh my god calm down it was a joke” Everyone knows if you tack “lol” onto the end of a sentence, no one can get mad at you because you were being hilarious, and if anyone gets offended they’re being an uptight prick. You truly are the George Carlin
of our time.

• Miss Validator. “I’m a girl, and I think this is HILARIOUS. Calm down feminists!” Watch as everyone in the thread uses her as yet another reason why you are stupid and oversensitive and they are hilarious and right. May also “apologise for her gender” in a cosmic blast of internalised misogyny.

• Mr “I refuse to believe this happens”. He would never cat call or rape and isn’t sexist at all and thinks gender roles are outmoded. Therefore, he thinks, everyone else thinks just like me too. Can’t line up women’s experiences of sexism with his own worldview, so dismisses everything they say,demanding “proof”. Sees no irony in this.

• Mr “actually you’ve got this the wrong way round”. Silly you! This is looks, feels, smells and tastes like misogyny but is actually misandry. Don’t worry, easy mistake to make, anyone could have done it. Just don’t say I’m wrong or I’ll link you to pages explaining why you have female privilege and call you an ignorant b***h.

• Mr EvoPsych! Has never studied this but has skimmed some articles and therefore can explain every facet of how human behaviour works. And why it’s just best and most natural for everyone to stick to their traditional gender roles. Because that’s how we did it in 10000bc. Women and men are just different, that’s why you’re not as smart as him.

• Mr *totally unrelated point*. Seriously dude, how did you even get here. Seems to be having a totally different discussion than the one you’re having, then whines that you aren’t addressing his points.

• Mr “I’m so not the problem here. Hello ladies.” Ugh, photoshopping is TERRIBLE, fashion is STUPID and I tell my girlfriend not to wear makeup because makeup is GROSS. I like small boobs - take that societal norms! You don’t have to have plastic surgery anymore, girls, because I like’em small. Stop dieting! I like a woman with meat on her bones. Read Proust! I like a lady who’s well-read. I don’t understand why you would want an item of clothing that cost more than £50 - you don’t need that to attract me madam. What do you mean, you like wearing eyeliner and don’t dress yourself solely for my benefit? I told you I don’t like high heels! STOP DOING THINGS I DON’T LIKE!

edit: sorry, I hope that's better

That didn't help much. I posted it from my phone and didn't realize how it looked. I'll get on an actual computer and attempt to make it more readable soon.

Thank you! It makes much more sense now!

(Hmm ... uh-huh ... uh-huh ... hmm ... yes ... I see ...)

I'm more of the "Real World" type, but that doesn't mean that I would go out of my way to encourage sexist behavior. Some of my opinions may seem otherwise, but overall, I think people on both sides of the issue would be better off to stop sniping away at each other.

Again, thank you Meems!

No problem, I wouldn't have posted it like that if I had realized it was so impossible to read. :)

I wouldn't say this applies to everyone everywhere(though I do know we have some people who fit one or more of these descriptions here) but this is pretty accurate to the lengthy debates I see on facebook and elsewhere. Then again, I am from a small town in Texas, and I am surrounded by ultra-conservative people who have certain ideas about women and men that are pretty... outdated. So a lot of it comes from people I went to school with or have worked with. I actually closed that facebook and the reason I was getting sick of it was a lot of ignorant people attempting to argue about sexism and racism and religion and so on, among other things.

I imagine at least a few people here have seen the same.

I have definitely been "Miss Validator" in the past.

I think there is a massive difference between validating it and simply sticking up for equal rights - truly equal rights, that is.

There are many cases of women being sexist against men and they actually *do* try to hide behind the "feminism" or "equal rights" agruements - and attempt to make anyone who really does support equal rights as validating or sexist themselves. Just like there are plenty of men who try to use a similar agruement.

I think one of the biggest failures of sexism today is to think that it only applies to women, or to men, depending on your perspective. Men are also beholden to sexism - it actually benefits a small minority of them, the rest of them get a raw deal as soon as they don't measure up to "what a man should be" - the same thing we get as women, punished socially if we don't measure up to "what a woman should be". In order for there to be a steroype about women that we are held to and moulded to conform within, there must also be one for men.

It's high time we quiet with the "who has it worse" game or any other game and just admit that we are all human beings and all of us have human rights - none of us should have those rights violated and nobody should be sitting on the sidelines watching it and letting it happen either.

I don't think this is meant to imply women have it worse or they are the only ones who experience sexism. I think it's meant to poke fun at frequent arguments that pop up on the internet.

I'm not saying you are.
I'm saying that too many use it as another excuse that isn't on that list...... including many members here.

That's funny - I see stuff like that too.

I also see stuff like this:

Miss Paranoid: "SCHRODINGER'S RAPIST!! !!THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!"

Miss "It's not sexist if I do it to a dude": "What about teh menz??!!111"

Miss "perpetuating gender stereotypes under the guise of feminism" "But men are big and strong and they aren't afraid of anything and can defend themselves. Woman have no agency and can't do anything for ourselves and that's why rape is exclusively a women's issue.

Mr "I'm a man, so that makes me the ambassador for all men": "As a man, I have never experienced this, so that means you are all lying and not checking your privilege.

Mr Sexist Prick: "I protect women because they can't protect themselves"

Miss Secret Misogynist: "You're acknowledging that there are male issues that have nothing to do with misogyny? You must be a whore with internalized misogyny. Go choke on a dick, you c**t!"

Tumblr feminism really pisses me off sometimes.

My thoughts can be summed up as:

1- Sexism exists;

2- however, it would be much less of a problem if people stopped talking about it (the same applies to racism). The sexists would realize nobody cares about their antiquated opinions and would shut up and try to control their sexism;

3- the worst kind of sexists are those who see sexism in things where no sane person would see it;

4- for a cynical guy, I may be a little too idealistic; I am not sure.

Uh, the Schrodinger's rapist thing isn't paranoia.

Also, not talking about sexism is part of the problem, the same applies to racism. Sweeping these matters under the rug may make some people more comfortable but these things are given more room to grow if they go unchallenged.

Civil rights didn't happen by shutting up about racism, that's not how change happens.

The problem seems to be dying down in the last decades. I believe ignoring it will be enough to put it out of its misery. Morgan Freeman said it better:

If we stop seeing differences that are not there to begin with, there will be no prejudice about those differences. Men, women, blacks, whites, NTs, autistics, Americans, Iraqis... They are just humans. No need to segregate them based on arbitrary labels.

Of course it's paranoia. The whole concept is about justifying women feeling "unsafe" around men and telling men that they need to act differently so that more women know that they are not about to rape them. Nonsese. Pure nonsense. It's based on this stereotype that men are predators and women are weaklings that need protected. If that is the case, then every aspie is Schrodinger's Adam lanza.

We should stop seeing differences but that doesn't mean we should start pretending people don't see differences, that just allows sexism to go unchecked.

I don't think you have any idea what "schrodinger's rapist" means.

Good point. Then, the goal is to show people that there are no differences outside of the biological ones. It can be done with education. Which is why I think we really should review the current system we use to educate children: stop teaching them useless things and prepare them to live in society. We should teach ethics, finances, logic, housework (what? It is an essencial part of life as an adult) and other things that they will use in their lives. Leave subjects like Biology, Literature and Chemistry to extracurricular classes and/or universities.

The only problem is that education is going to take a long time to produce results. The children of today will still acquire quite a few prejudiced ideas from the current generations, even if the schools taught them to be better people. In other words, I will not live to see the world I envision. :cry:
