My son is 11 and was just diagnosed with Asperger's. Lately he his been playing with himself and getting poop everywhere, on himself, the walls, the toilet, the door handles, etc. I have talked with him and let him know that this behavior is completely unacceptable behavior and extremely hazardous. When I ask him why he is doing it all he can tell me is that he doesn't know why he does it.

I have taken away his video games and computer till he decides to quit this unacceptable behavior, but yet he is still doing it. I am at the point where I can't let him be in his room alone with the door closed and I have to monitor him when he goes to the bathroom.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions on how to deal with this behavior? I am at a loss and I am afraid that my 2 year old is going to start doing this same behavior if I don't get this under control soon.

His only diagnosis is Asperger's? That seems like a really strange thing for an Aspie kid to do at that age.
I would tell him he's not allowed to close the door while he's in the bathroom anymore until he stops doing that. Buy him some PlayDoh as an alternative.

This behavior is very odd for an 11 year old.

Could by a textural stimming thing? Maybe give him some playdoh or silly putty (or whatever is closest to the feel/texture of feces) and see if he switches?

It sounds like it is something other than just AS to me, too. Could be a stim---could be anxiety or even the result of abuse. (I don't want to alarm you, but it is a possibility.) I do not know how to find out what it is if he will not tell you.

You might want to take him to some sort of professional...maybe a counselor or psychologist (that's good with children, that's a must)? Maybe they can help you figure out what's going on, because I agree with everyone else, that sounds very uncharacteristic.

Mine was doing something similar, but he was five. He was always getting it under his fingernails (very gross), and then being mad when we scrubbed him down to get rid of it. He finally said that he thought his nails looked pretty. I bought him fingernail polish and painted his nails and it stopped for a long time. My family looked at me very strangely for painting my son's fingernails, but it was so much better than having him find an alternative of his own! I think it also had something to do with not being coordinated enough to not get it on his hands while wiping, and then trying to get it off his hands. We worked on the wiping and that helped too.

Agree with the others though that it is strange for an eleven year old to start that.
