This is probably old news to most people here, but I've just learned of a Linux compatible MMO racing game. I love my Ubuntu set-up, but apart from Euro Truck Simulator 2, Super Tux Kart and Colin McRae 4 through Wine there hasn't been much to shout about in terms of driving games.

Anyone here have any experience with this game or MMOs in general?

I've tried it to test out the Oculus Rift, and it seems like the best sim racer available at the moment, but Project CARS might take the genre to a whole new level when it is released in March of next year. iRacing is definitely worth a try if you're into racing and/or simulators.

I think War Thunder was just released for Linux. Its a WW2-era combat simulator, currently mostly with airplanes but also with tanks. Also compatible with da Rift. Even has an airplane racing mode. Its MMO and free-to-play. Its also not really 'pay to win', its more like 'pay to progress faster' but even if you don't pay you'll still progress.

War Thunder looks too arcady. Aerial combat is nonetheless my cup of tea, and I will most definitely migrate from racing to flight in one form or another. I'm currently downloading DCS, and Elite Dangerous seems like an interesting alternative to traditional dogfighting, but both titles are incompatible with Linux.

War Thunder has an arcade mode, which is indeed quite 'arcady', but it also has more realistic 'Realistic Battles' mode, and an even more realistic Simulator mode (which forces you to use joystick, forces you to only use cockpit view, and has a lot of realistic controls like prop pitch, fuel mixture, radiator and cowl flap opening and closing, etc.) , so appearances might be deceiving. Elite Dangerous is one that I also want to check out though last I saw its not out yet even for windows? Back in the day I played the original Elite on the Apple II, one of my all time favorite games.

Thanks for the tip. I might take a closer look.

I used to play Elite on the C64, but I was never a huge fan. Another game worth keeping an eye on is Star Citizen. The developers seem ambitious. Here a recent demo showing early footage of the FPS-aspect.
