I have recently been diagnosed with motor and vocal tics-my vocal tics include animal sounds, echolalia, and corporalia; my motor tics are shrugging, jerking my neck sharply, spitting, arm flapping, hissing, and clicking my teeth.. It actually took my parents over a year to notice them. I'm one of those people whose symptoms were barely noticable befoe adolescent years- I used to pop my ears and blink a lot. When I turned thirteen, I started shouting really random things. Recently they got louder, and I couldn't cover them up anymore, so I got the diagnosis. It just drives me crazy though when people ignore it if I try to explain. There was some jerk lady in a park who I started ticcing in front of, and she accused me of trying to freak her dog out. I also hate it how my dad is scared to let me out of the house, just because I sometimes shout obscenities. I'm a TS kid not a monster!

I was diagnosed at 15 but I didn't accept it for about two years. I have both motor and vocal tics which occur regularly throughout the day. Sometimes I do get swearing and that is a little bit embarrassing. Thankfully I can usually keep it under control for a while.

Nope.

I have voluntary motor mannerisms (I do such to relieve anxiety and to make myself "feel" real), but that's an Autism thingy.

I have a lot of stimms but I don't think it counts as tics since I have them under control.

No I don't. I can't say the temptation to cuss in public is very strong in me, let alone overwhelming. I did fluff my lines once while singing a song, and the words that came out were utterly obscene, but I'm sure that was just an unfortunate accident  . Though I did wonder at the time.

As for tics, nothing that's way out of my own control. When I was a teenager my father once described to the rest of the family the way he'd noticed I'd been walking (we weren't getting on very well at all at the time, and he'd sometimes try to humiliate me like that, which was strangely out of character for him). Apparently my head didn't bob up and down enough while I was walking. I neither know nor care whether or not I still walk that way. Quite likely it's not the world's least noticeable walk, but thanks to modern political correctness, I'd sincerely hope that nobody halfway decent would think any the worse of me for it. Dad was decent usually, but nobody's perfect.

I do a few movements that I suppose are strange, mostly because I feel I don't know how I'm "supposed" to move. Kind of strangely graceful like Jack Sparrow, only probably not as sexy. And I probably have a few personal nuances like shrugging a lot, or going dum de dum for no apparent reason, which I seem to change periodically like fashion accessories 8) . But it's all typical NT or Aspie as far as I can tell. I could probably train myself out of those things if I had enough information, but I've got better things to do. People can love me, warts and all, or they can b***** off. End of rant.

No, and I apologise to any genuine sufferers, but I do not have it. ;)

Nope. Multiple motor tics since my teens, but no vocal tics, fortunately. The motor tics are bad enough.

I remember my first tic was vocal (but vocal ones happen relatively rarely to me) and I got it when I was 4 or 5. They always accompanied me but it's a thing I'm used to and I'm not disturbed by them. Anyway i don't have problems with controlling them in public. Sometimes I happen to have even four tics in the same period of time.

For many years, even as an adult I never thought it could have anything to do with Tourette's though - I had heard about this but I thought it's only about people with coprolalia.

Not sure. I think I might have vocal and motor tics.

my tics used to be really bad when i was young, now they aren't so severe and i have some degree of control (when i have to do my vocal tic i usually whisper it so no one else will be bothered by it) my motor tics are alot less now too. it mostly comes back when im under severe stress, when i'm depressed or when i have a fit of anxiety.

I had bad vocal (like, horribly annoying because nobody thought making noises several times in a minute could be tic) and apparently also motor tics (not sure about that though) throughout my preteens and teens. I didn't know that jerking your head and arms is a motor tic. I didn't knew motor tics existed until it was pointed out to me, to be exact.

Fortunately, since I was about 15-16 years, I only know of very mild motor tics anymore. You won't know usually. Which is good really, because while motor tics do not bother me and vocal tics can be okay, it freaks everyone out. People want to kill you for it (metaphorically speaking).

Now my therapist even said they sincerely doubt I have tics because you rarely ever see anything anymore. That's good, really. I experience times when I suddenly have a lot of motor tics and feel I'm about to start with vocal tics again too. They're unrelated to stress though! I have no idea where they come from.

I am very worried about if I get methylphenidate for my bad attention deficit, tics might resurface. I really don't want that. I'm much too social for that these days.

I wouldn't be able to work even, I guess. You just can't work with people who are annoyed by you making noises every minute for hours or jerking your head too often.

The syndrome of Dr. Tourette topic

My brother has Tourette's, though he is NT. Motor tics and grunts, but no swearing.

I never noticed it as a kid. I used to think everyone's brother was like this, and was surprised when this was not the case. :o

I thought Tourette's was ND, not NT?
