Hi, I was diagnosed with AS at 18 (I am 30 now) and I have always had obsessions, such as collecting rocks and bones, a fascination with base numbers, music obsessions (whether it be a certain song, or a specific singer or group), etc. However, my biggest obsessions have always been based on tv shows or movies and in almost all cases, I am obsessed with a certain character. Right now I am really obsessed with the show Bones. My favorite character on the show is Zack. I am infatuated with him and everything Bones related. Some of the other shows and characters I have been into are (listing show first, then character): Tin Man (mini series) - Ambrose, CSI - Nick, Stargate Atlantis - Carson, That's so Raven - Chelsea, Firefly - Simon, X-files - Moulder, etc. Some movies I have been into are: Across the Universe - Prudence, The Greatest Game Ever Played - Francis, Serenity - Simon (again), Lord of the Rings trilogy - Legolas, Timeline - Marek, etc.

So, my question is are there other people here who get obsessed in this way? Also, does anyone know how common it is? I know that obsessions usually consist of behaviors such as collecting, or wanting to know many facts about something and that is true for me, but I don't hear that many cases of people being into shows or movies the way I am.

I've been obsessed with characters before. I remember I was fixated on Ariel from the Little Mermiad, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Christopher Robin, Anita from 101 Dalmatians, Kevin from Home Alone, Ellie from Jurassic Park, Belle from Beauty and the beast, Dottie and Kit from A League of Their Own, Carla from Vision Quest, I think that's all.

I am now fixated on Joon and Sam from Benny & Joon.

I have no clue how common this is.

That is good to know. It was apparent to me that some people must have the same type of obsession, being that there are so many people in the world, but I was still curious about it.

I have to aplogize, however, because I could have read the post "what is your obsession" and posted on there. Although not everyone on there has a similar obsession, I should have checked to see if anyone did, before posting a new topic. I typed in "obsessions" in the search box, but I didn't see that topic. Of course, after posting, I scrolled down and it was about 4 topics below mine. cest la vie.

I used to be obsessed with a character from a 'Mad TV' skit called 'My White Mama' whose name was Mama Jane, in 1995 - 1996. I was obsessed with the character, Austin Powers from 1997 until early 2007. I'm now obsessed with Sid from the children's movie, 'Flushed Away', which has been the most identical to me. :O)

I'm not obsessed with television characters. My obsessions are with cats and Roger Bannister.

An obsession is merely something you like a lot for the sake of itself. NTs will ridicule this as they can only like stuff that will advance their career/social/sexual prospects. For them, the idea of liking something 'just because' is deeply disturbing.

Obsessions are abnormal and somewhat annoying. I think that people who have obsessions have some kind of "encephalopathy" and they need help.

I bet you 85% of the people on this site have their various obsessions, and that statement is a good way to pick a fight which is entirely uncalled for, and unwanted.
