Hi Catrina,
It Stewart, we meet at the last dinner. in Werribee.
It was great to meet you and all the other Aspies.
For me it was an amazing experience, all of my life I have hated social functions, but this was sooooo different, even though it went for 2 1/2 hours it seemed like 10 minutes, I was disappointed when it finished.
I have been trying to work out why I enjoyed it so much, and the only thing I can put it down to, was that I felt safe for some reason. When Im at a social function with NT's I feel threatened.
Thank you for organising it.

Hi Stewart (and Catster), it's John who was at that meeting too.
Yeah, I think the safety thing has to do with being more able to understand what's happening in the minds of other spectrum people, and since fear always seems to be "fear of the unknown", it drops off dramatically. |

I so agree "fear of the unknown" holds so many of us back from doing so many things, being out of routine never easy, but taking those first steps can be vital especially for nthe younger generation who have to get on and be in society , as for me being older I can back out and be myself that little bit more - quirky, eccentric... just me good luck with the group... _________________ Web site for varied neurological differences : Aspergers - Dyspraxia - Dyslexia - ADHD - Bipolar : http://www.asplanet.info/

| How many people showed up to those meetups? Like, to the dinner, for example. I'm wondering if there are more, or if there is a higher concentration of, Aspies in England than in Canada or the US. I want to live in a place with a high concentration of Aspies so that I can just practically walk out my front door and meet some, or at least so that I don't have to travel any farther than one commutes to work, in order to meet a lot of different Aspies. It would take a lot of work to live there, actually, but I might visit for a long time. |

I live in Melbourne Australia which seems to be autism-spectrum-central here. In North America I'm told that Silicon Valley and the New York general area are major hubs. I'm not sure about the UK.
In general, anywhere that nerds, geeks and eccentric people tend to gather is probably a good place to start. Once you start finding people with common interests, you'll be able to ask them where the other traps are.
It really depends on the event as to how many people show up. I've seen as many as 40 people turn up to end of year breakup dinners, but the average is about 10 or so.
Loosening the definition of "autism spectrum" to include sci-fi and computer clubs and the like which are more than 80% AS, I've seen hundreds turn up to meetings. |

| From my experience Auckland, it's the worst place for an Aspie. I might move to Melbourne |

And yet I've never knowingly met another person with an ASD. |

Really?! I live in Melbourne and I never noticed that. Apart from Scifi/Anime/Video Game clubs, where can you find these Aspies???
I'm interested in befriending an Aspie in Melbourne IRL if I have time. The majority of the people in my course at Melbourne Uni are NT and I'm sick of the way they subtly ostracize, gossip about me and treat me differently from others. |

I'm no expert only visited the place for 2 weeks on a holiday I would have thought perhaps Fitzroy and surrounds? Any where their are a high concentration of vego/vegan restaurants, Fitzroy has quite a few them.
Vegetarian Orgasm was my favourite which recently (sadly) shut down. |

| I can't say where there are high numbers of aspies but I do know that I normally get around 10 people to my monthly meeting but it depends. |
