...username?

Sometimes, some people make mistakes and it causes other WP'ers to hold long grudges. If they become a pariah here, are they allowed to start over on a new username?

Of course. Just as long as you are not IP banned, you can still access this board under guest or new user name you register under.

My old account is likedcalico and that got banned so I started posting under this name which I created in the summer of 2007 but never used it till November. I was IP banned for a few days and got unbanned and then perm banned in November 2007.

WrongPlanet Rules

Quote:

So yeah, shut down the old account first. No big deal.

I always cheer for the pariah that worked through the negativity and went on to be the better member. :D

I doubt that most WP'ers will begrudge you too much. I've said my share of really dumb things on this board, and most people don't seem to hold it against me. Trying to be someone you're not, however, isn't something that can be pulled off easily and attempting to do so (by starting over with a new username) is only likely to annoy people.

And how would one "shut down the old account"? Only Alex (the owner) has the ability to do that.

People who ignore Alex, and attempt to start up second accounts, are breaking the rules.

Personally, as I have said several times elsewhere, I find the rule to be extremely sensible, especially on WP.

I can see no reason for Alex to allow a user to switch accounts, other than in exceptional circumstances... and certainly not just because "I've annoyed someone else on WP and now they don't like me", as changing username isn't going to have anything but a temporary effect on that. If you've earned someone enmity once, you're going to do so again.

Opening a new account with the express intent to deceive others, and for no other reason, is just not going to be acceptable and will generally result in bans.

I think the more I know a person, the more I know what puts them off. Sooner or later, I'd get good at avoiding that.

This is not to deceive others; just to have a fresh start and do better the second time.

One of my online friends asked his account to be banned so he can create a new one. Personal reasons. He wasn't breaking any rules.
