I mentioned in a different thread I was offered the chance to write an article for a local entertainment weekly. It came out yesterday, and can be found here:

http://www.straight.com/article-210536/give-autistic-adults-chance?

Disclaimer: I didn't write the title, or the headline on the cover that says "Give me a voice: Autistic writer sounds off" (which makes me laugh). I just wrote the rest of it. If anyone wants to go comment on it on their website that would be great. Make me look good, or something.

Just don't copy the article here, please. The deal is they get an exclusive for the next week, and copyright violations would probably get me in trouble.

A good one, chip away at the edges.

I registered and tried to comment but it didn't show up. The site doesn't say anything about an approval process either. If it's not there by tomorrow I'll try again. The internets got the best of me.

Congratulations on the article though!

Editors change lots of things and make up titles, sometimes as if the author had written it.

Thank you for that. The phone is an enemy of mine too.

Good article. I can relate. The phone is absolutely unbearable for me. I freeze when it rings. I've let problems go unsolved because they could only be resolved by using the phone. I think if I ever had to call 911 for something, I wouldn't.

There's one comment up.

I always figured 911 would be easy - just dial and scream. They probably get it all the time. But maybe I'd freeze too. It's hard to know when I've never had to dial 911.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Excellent article. This message really needs to be conveyed.

As far as my experience goes, 911/000 is no problem, and I use the phone for no reason; I don't answer, nor dial for any reason but an emergency.

There's a zillion stories of seemingly nonverbal autistic children picking up the phone and dialling 911/000 and explaining the situation lucidly.

It is a good article.
Thank you, Anemone, for bringing an autistic's perspective into a Vancouver weekly.
Did it also appear in the printed edition?

Good work Anemone.

I cannot comment, because even though I was going to make an exception and register (I hate giving my email address just to leave a comment), I could not read the anti-spam thing that you have to type in to prove you are a real person....which is kind of sad, because I am confident that I am not a unicorn.

Yes, it was in the printed edition too. With a headline on the front page saying "Give me a voice: Autistic writer sounds off", which still makes me laugh. I took it literally at first and said to myself "But I have a voice. That's not the problem."

I hate those anti-spam things, too. Sometimes if you get the first one wrong, they give you a better one, but still. (I think it took two or three tries once to join a friend's Yahoo group because of one of those.) I think a lot of people hate them.

Good article. Glad you were able to share your voice. :thumright:
