This actually looks really good in my opinion. Maybe some subtle exaggerations for comedic value, but no Rain Man antics in sight. _________________ For time has imprisoned us,

Oh yes... definately a little more "realistic", I think. The guy on the bench telling Adam that he needs to talk about something else is dead on!! I hate it when that happens.... I especially liked the hug scene. The girl has to tell him to hug her! That was very "real". The "he lives in another world" and " you don't have to make that sort of compromise" bit is a little over the top, however. I have been called eccentric and weird, brainy, nerdy ... no one has ever accused me of living in another world . I rather like our Aspie eccentricities!! However, I do agree that it looks like a really good film. I liked Mozart and the Whale, but there was something about it that was "off" for me. I understand that emotions need to be exaggerated a bit for the cinema, however. I don't mean to totally bash the film.

wtf, Why do movies about aspies always have to be chick flicks?
I can't imagine a less likely genre. _________________ They murdered boys in Mississippi. They shot Medgar in the back.
Did you say that wasn't proper? Did you march out on the track?
You were quiet, just like mice. And now you say that we're not nice.
Well thank you buddy for your advice...

I think that's exactly the reason why. The idea of an Asperger's romance is so off-beat and out of keeping with the genre is what makes it interesting. _________________ For time has imprisoned us,

I'm looking forward to seeing it. From what I gather, it's gonna be good. _________________ "If there's one thing in my life that these years have taught it's that you can always see it coming, but you can never stop it." ~Cowboy Junkies
i hope aspie movies become a fashion thing and they will make hundreds of movies about it, and all the nt's will want to be like their aspie idols from the movies and aspies will become "cool".
i really wanna see if you could say it in words i like the style of that movie way more then this comedy stuff.

Yeah just like those superhero movies. But I still think they should make a drama something of the sort of "A Beautiful Mind".

I think that the problem is that most movies that have autistic characters present them by emphasizing their weird and unusual characteristics. I think that this is not the best for the autistic community, because the average, less educated people will draw the conclusion that Aspies -- and autistic people in general -- are freaks and weirdos.
I think that this movie creates much better image of the autistic people because it presents the Aspie character as a lovable and desirable person.

The weirdo issue is what bothered me about 'Mozart and the Whale'. While the characters were likeable enough, too much emphasis was placed on their quirks, odd behavior and strange mannerisms to the point that they were rendered one dimensional and cartoonish.
Adam seems like a more realistic representation of an AS person. His quirks and social awkwardness are apparent, but not outstanding to the point were he's no longer a person an audience could like and possibly even relate to. I've only seen the trailer and find him both believable and endearing. _________________ For time has imprisoned us,

Yes, I had the same problem with that movie.
In addition to that, in my country (Hungary) the title was localized in a way that further emphasized this cartoon-like approach of the movie. It was called something like "Eccentric love" in Hungarian, and I hate this translation very much because it communicates that Aspies are actually a bunch of freakish oddballs.
While the reality is that there are a lot of Aspies who are -- despite their apparent quirks and problems with communication and things like that -- very capable, who hold important jobs and who deserve respect in every way. I actually think that most of us are like that. I think that Aspies should be presented as respected and respectable members of the society who create even more values than the average people do.
Secondly, I agree with you that the personality of Aspie characters shouldn't be reduced to the diagnostic criteria presented in the DSM. It should be shown that Aspies are first and foremost human beings who also have a desire to love and to be loved, and who can be loved and also deserve love.
