I just saw this new movie trailer for an upcoming romcom about autism called "Adam" and I don't know how others may feel about this but I loved "Mozart And The Whale" and yet this looks so much better! :D Now since "Mozart And the Whale" wasn't a big blockbuster (and neither was my other recent film favorite "Across The Universe") I would like everyone at WrongPlanet to see it PLEASE because then hopefully they'll make a film based on the book "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. Me and my family loved that book and if romcoms are successful maybe a group of people within society and maybe even ourselves would find Asperger's appealing (there's a lot of good qualities others and ourselves don't notice) Plus there could be AS romance novels (besides Vicki Lewis Thompson's Nerd Series which is good) ranging from PG to R in explicitness ages 12 to above in target groups. Imagine characters like MaryAnn dating the Professor or Gilligan. We never got to see that!! !! ! Or to be contemporary the physicists from the Big Bang Theory finding true love with a perfect emotional match. There was a couple of times Sheldon almost got with some nice women who understood him and everyone else to get at least an occasional booty call so why not let them find a mate well suited for them to have it wouldn't kill the show to have nerds in committed relationships it will help phase society in to my new show I wrote a pilot for called "Man's Best Friends" an animated sitcom about a freelance writer with asperger's syndrome named Brian Becque who gets dating advice from his OCD cat Thomas and his ADD dog Mike and comically matched with his schizoid hamster as Brian tries to woo the neighborhood librarian Elizabeth

'Mozart and the Whale' was pretty good, except I think the characterizations were a little bit over-the-top at times and the characters quite one-dimensional. 'Adam' looks way better in this sense.

And true, since it's a romantic comedy and turns out to be a bigger release than MATW alot the audience should be a good one. You mentioned the likes of 'The Big Bang Theory', which has endeared people a bit more to nerdy types, but since this film has Asperger's in huge letters, it might reflect us in a more positive and likable fashion while blatantly highlighting AS too.

Your idea for a show sounds cute, interesting and strange! I'd definitely watch it. :D

and then there's mary and max. :)

Quote:
MARY & MAX is a claymated feature film from the creators of the Academy Award winning short animation HARVIE KRUMPET. It is a simple tale of pen-friendship between two very different people; Mary Dinkle, a chubby lonely eight year old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz, a 44 year old, severely obese, Jewish man with Aspergers Syndrome living in the chaos of New York. Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, Mary and Max's friendship survives much more than the average diet of life's ups and downs. Like Harvie Krumpet, MARY AND MAX is innocent but not naïve, as it takes us on a journey that explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, where babies come from, obesity, kleptomania, sexual difference, trust, copulating dogs, religious difference, agoraphobia and much much more.

The reluctance I have with these movies is that they are going to project even more stereotypes of us. To be honest a film is not long enough to do us - we need a full TV series with a decent range of characters in.

I want to see this new movie when it expands release.

Hugh Dancy & Rose Byrne look so cute together!

Well, there's "The Big Bang Theory", which has a range of nerdy characters from the perverted Jewish geek, the Indian immigrant geek and the über-Aspie genius geek ;-)

Mozart and The Whale is based on genuine real people you know.

A movie like Shrek 1 hints at the idea that all things are possible. Do feel that an animated sitcom is a good vehicle. Animated shows (especially comedies) often make it possible, it seems to me, to talk about certain subjects which might ordinarily be overlooked in other formats.

I like the idea for the sitcom! :D I hope it gets pitched by a TV producer, and I think it would be great! I wonder what channel it will be on, but, from where I live, it sounds like A+, CW, ABC, or Fox material! ^^ I didn't like Mozart and the Whale, though, because it kind of offended me (then again, a lot of things offend me, such as racist jokes, blond jokes, and just about every Disney show I see aside from Phineas and Ferb), and it made us seem like we don't understand anything. I don't know what Adam is. What's it about?

What makes you say that? The main characters are pretty smart.

It's a love story about a man with Asperger's and a neurotypical woman.

I saw Adam and thought it was okay but it seemed to portray the main character as an Aspergers stereotype without much personality of his own, unlike perhaps Sheldon of "The Big Bang Theory". An article on Slate at the time of Adam's release in theaters was, I think, "Asperger's [or Autism] is the New Black," explaining that we have to start somewhere with diversity, at the risk of oversimplifying, etc. Some people I know thought the movie does not show enough negative sides of Asperger's other than his meltdown. I don't necessarily agree on the behavioral front, but certainly there are often motoric difficulties etc.; I'm not sure of any self-advocates who identify motor skills (especially gross motor perhaps) as a strength (compared to NTs).

I hated both movies. Why must all movies about AS be love stories? My mum says it's to show that AS people can and do fall in love. Well some of us don't even want to. Adam's girlfriend was an utter b***h. Why did he fall in love with her? I agree with other posters, he seemed blank and devoid of a personality. Let's see a genius punk/thug aspie for once who is trying to be a sucess and when people blacklash him/her, they get owned. Instead of a love story, why can't they have an NT best friend who dosen't quite get them but whom really admires them for their weirdness and isn't afraid to show it.

I saw both and while they had moments, I didn't like them too much. Most likely I felt the film stereotyped and simplified AS instead of making the characters more 3-d.

Now, watching Barton Fink is something I prefer. While the film doesn't focus on AS, it's obvious the protagonist has it or some qualities of it. This is most likely due to the fact that the actor, John Turturro, has AS and demonstrates it through the subtle actions of the character.

They aren't all love stories. Check out "Ben X", for example...

... or an NT girlfriend who admires him for his weirdness and isn't afraid to show it. What bothered me about the film "Adam" is that his girlfriend just didn't care to understand him or really appreciate him. In fact, the film basically made it appear like an NT can't actually have a long term relationship with someone with AS and for a love story that's just... wrong ! I actually watched "Adam" with my girlfriend this weekend and my girlfriend just didn't get why they couldn't give it a happy end...
