My 10 year old son does this too (punching his own head, and occasionally other things like trying to choke himself). In school, his teacher has made great headway by not tolerating the behaviour. It won't be medicated away. It's something he's making an active choice to do, a strategy to get out of...

On this board, I suspect that fairly academic topics will seem too dry and boring to attract the teenage-boy mindset. At least I would hope so. I think if you present a topic in the same style in which you wrote this post, like-minded people would be inclined to reply. Years ago, I was on a women's ...

My sister used to do this kind of thing when we were kids. A knife, usually. And my little brother went at me with a floor lamp once, smashing it in the process. I was bigger and stronger than them, so they went for weapons. I don't want to downplay what you have experienced, but just to say I survi...

Much like my family. I'm also single parenting 2 kids (one diagnosed with ASD and the other with a diagnosis pending approval from a fly-in child psychiatrist). We started with homeschool, then moved to regular school when my relationship with the kids' dad ended. The kids are doing fine in school t...

Great topic!
Best: a stack of CDs of obscure but beautiful music I never would otherwise have discovered
Worst: a large, tacky made-in-China snowman ornament (too large to discretely dispose of) |

I can relate to this as well, especially when it comes to subjects that I'm feeling emotional about. The closer it is to my heart, the harder it is to speak in conversation about-- but I can write up a storm.

Not sure where you are... but in Canada it's to your benefit if you can get them to lay you off officially (not fire you). Then you are eligible for employment insurance, if you have worked enough hours. If you quit, you aren't eligible (if I understand it correctly). There is a form they need to fi...

Consider yourself free to job-hunt for something mroe inspiring and rewarding. :) I so remember these sorts of experiences... it's happened to me in several retail/service type minimum wage jobs. Totally sucks. They should have given you a couple weeks' notice, but instead this type of employer says...

Magique, your daughter and mine seem to have a lot in common. My daughter (6) is also... different... with other children, though very bright and articulate with people she's comfortable around (mainly family). One advantage she has in school is her strong reading skills. I attribute this in part to...

Spudnik: hauling fuel or food? We sure use more than we make here. :( Your trip plan sounds well worth doing! Dawson likely hasn't change a whole lot since your ancestors were there, apart from the souvenirs-- the business are required to maintain the old facades. Thanks for the welcome, JerryHatake...

Hey Spudnik, were you delivering survival goods for us crazy northerners? I think the town's nothing special-- lots of corrugated metal buildings, vinyl village suburbs, Starbuck's, Timmy's, WalMart and the other usual suspects-- it's the landscape around here and the wild places that I love.

Hey, I guess I should have started here eh? I found this website through a twist of events on Facebook. I'm in Whitehorse, Yukon where I live in a house with my two remarkable kids and way too many domesticated animals. My son (10) is diagnosed with autism specrtum (Asperger's) and my daughter (6) i...
